House Democrats Who Haven’t Supported Net Neutrality Yet Have All Taken Money from Telecoms

The deadline to pass the piece of legislation that would allow Congress to overturn the repeal of net neutrality is quickly approaching, yet many Democrats are staying mum.

That leaves 18 Democrats in the House who have yet to sign the petition, which is, again, the only hope Congress has of voting and passing this resolution to restore net neutrality this year. A Motherboard review of FEC filings shows that each of the representatives has taken thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from one or more major telecom companies, including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, and the National Cable Television Association (NCTA), an ISP trade group....

This is yet another example of why it’s important to not vote for politicians who take corporate PAC money.

Dark-money groups were ordered to reveal their donors. They didn’t.

Some groups filed reports that included no information on donors but had notes asserting they were following the rules, while others skipped filing with the Federal Election Commission altogether.

A major disclosure deadline passed Monday with few political nonprofits unveiling any donors, and even some of those that did offer a peek at their backers still left the original source of the donations murky...

Political nonprofits have to issue disclosures only once every three months, the new guidance said, so the next deadline to name donors won’t be until Jan. 15, two months after the November elections — meaning voters might not get to see who funded ads for and against candidates until well after they go to the polls.

Meanwhile, some campaign-finance experts say dark-money groups can just change the way they raise and spend money to avoid disclosing donors altogether. Political nonprofits that run so-called issue ads, which focus on policy issues instead of individual candidates, don’t have to reveal their donors.

This is also a terrific example of why we need new laws which prohibit politicians from taking money from corporations and the back-channels they use. This is such a good example of how money corrupts politics. Not only do big donors have an outsized influence on who wins as a result of their money going to ads and smear campaigns - allowing them to essentially choose the most pro-corporate candidates - we see here that the level of control can go deeper; in this case, screening potential staff members. The staff who might argue for a more pro-labor position can be screened out, while the pro-corporate staffer can be pushed in.
