By far my most popular fanfic in the Zelda fandom is Wolfhide. (I almost typed "Wolfwood" - damn you, Trigun-brain!) Anyway, I wrote that fanfic nearly 20 year ago, when Twilight Princess was a recent Zelda game, and it's still going strong with readers. I get a lot of commentary and kudos on it. Not to tell people what is a good fic or a bad fic - I am overjoyed that it resonates with people to this day and it is one of my own fics that I like, but I must say that I am surprised that it is as well-regarded as it is when the "twist" is something that can be seen from 50 miles away. I don't consider it particularly good horror in terms of surprises, as "what a tweest!" is more of a foregone conclusion. Perhaps what people resonate with is that forgone conclusion and the tension of bracing themselves for the characters finding out? Anyway, thank you to the people who still fling comments my way on a fic I wrote, like, 18 some odd years ago.
