BEST TRACKS OF 2017-ARTISTS LIST #33
Soul saving pop from Adelaide based artist Wolfjay. He stunned our ears earlier this year with the fantastic Formative Years and then followed it with some killer reworks of his solid bop For A Moment. Here are the tunes that made his year great--we shall let him introduce his favs in his own words!
I fell in love with pop music all again this year, with so many great artists redefining the possibilities of what pop music can sound like. Hereʼs my picks of the year, with a mix of fresh young artists and old favourites doing new things.
01. Autopsy by Lonelyspeck
I didnʼt know that pop music could sound like this. Autopsyʼs blend of frenetic electronic drums and RnB sensibilities make it equally at home in a club or in your headphones. Damn near perfect.
02. Friends Donʼt Make Out by Muki
I first heard Muki when she was supporting Paces on his Australian tour this year, and I havenʼt stopped listening to this track since. Itʼs a glossy production with heart - something we donʼt normally get! I canʼt wait to hear what Muki puts out next!
03. In My Head by LEO
This track pounds forward right out of the gate, and holds the pace throughout without sacrificing dynamics — which is much easier said than done. Fast-paced without feeling anxious, LEOʼs signature 80ʼs synth-pop arpeggiator tendencies come full circle on this gem. Put it on repeat and drink champagne all night.
04. HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar
I remember being totally floored by this track the very first time I heard it. Thereʼs barely anything going on - itʼs pure, no fucks given, braggadocious, Kendrick at his very best. Drive around with this cranking on the terrible stereo in your best friends car at 1am with the windows down for guaranteed good vibes.
05. 9 (After Coachella) by Cashmere Cat, MØ, and Sophie
Cashmere Cat shares production duties with PC-pop savior Sophie on this artificially sweet festival anthem of unrequited love. Cutesy steel drum samples run head-on into heavy trance synths and trap beats, with MØʼs vocals soaring overhead. It absolutely shouldnʼt work as well as it does.
06. Passionfruit by Drake
Deceptively simple and almost sterile in its arrangement and production, Drake brings so much tenderness to this poppy alt-RnB late night jam. I canʼt find a single flaw with it; itʼs exactly what itʼs supposed to be. Few artists are putting out songs with this kind of quality as consistently as Drake and the OVO team.
07. I Dare You by The XX
This year the XX dropped their most radio friendly album ever, and in the process didnʼt lose any of their charm. Less is definitely more this one, with Romy and Oliverʼs vocals hanging in the air while those drums just pound away. This is headphone pop at itʼs best - lush enough to lose yourself in, sparse enough to leave you room to think.
08. SOLE M8S by Mura Masa
The last 12 months have been huge for Mura Masa, releasing his album through a string of singles and B-Sides with an almost incomprehensible amount of features and collaborations. SOLE M8S is one of those smaller releases; atmospheric, catchy, moody, and hopeful. Itʼs a delicate balance, and Alex manages it superbly.
09. Dots by Woodes
Probably the biggest sounding song on the list - this track sounds like nothing else. Elleʼs vocals just soar on this one, itʼs so perfect. Itʼs so refreshing to hear a pop song with some depth for once. Iʼve had this one on repeat since it dropped this year.
10. New York by St. Vincent
This is the kind of song that can only be written by someone with some experience under their belt, itʼs so mature and controlled. No one can write a pop song like St. Vincent, and this is easily one of her best.
