to avoid people voting wrong I have a disclaimer: The character on the right is NOT from Sword Art Online, and is not the same character as any characters in Sword Art Online. At least according to my sources (I know I'm not entirely convinced either)

"Er war so anders als alle anderen und dachte Gedanken, die sonst keiner dachte."
– Käthe Recheis - "Wolfsaga"
I went to an exhibition about one of my favourite authors (Käthe Recheis) and I got so stupidly emotional about these guys.
So... I could not resist. I started translating Wolfsaga. The two-page foreword took me a quarter of an hour. And countless trips to some dictionary site to check whether I had the right word. (Yes, yes, and yes again, why can’t I just trust my brain?)
But - language problem. In German, “der Wolf” is male - but also, the word you use to refer to any wolf if you don’t know its sex.
“Die Wölfin” is a female wolf.
And it seems ... wrong to use “wolf” wherever the German text has “Wolf”, and then use “she-wolf” for “Wölfin” - because that would imply male is the norm and female the exception...
But always writing “the male wolf” feels weird too.
Hmm... I guess I can just use “wolf” everywhere unless it’s really necessary to tell two of them apart. That seems most natural in English (even though it still feels odd to my German-speaking brain, so used to gendered nouns.)
Translating is weird.
Those who turn against the Law, the Law will turn against. How long has this mountain been standing, mother wolf? It was here before us and will be here after us. But before it existed, there was the Law, and it will always exist. When my spirit wandered, I saw him who was strong and mighty and turned away from the Law, but I also saw one who was weak and did not forget the Law. Look at the grass, Ahkuna! One step of your paws bends it, but the stone into which it sends its roots can not withstand it. The weak one I saw will be stronger than the strong one."
Käthe Recheis, Wolfsaga (translation by me)
This is one of the quotes I keep coming back to. Because the Law is: respect for everything that lives. Every life is as valuable as our own.
And need I saw who I think of now when I read, “strong and mighty and turned away from the Law”?
I’m happy to be the weak one, and I will be stronger than the strong. So will all of us who remember the Law.
