Week 5: Stepping out of my Comfort Zone
This week, I stepped out of my comfort zone in a few different ways, as DAWIDA attended the Women Deliver kick-off meeting, held at the ‘Sex og Samfund’ organization in Copenhagen.
The purpose of the kick-off meeting was to gather all participants and stakeholders that will be attending the Women Deliver conference in May of 2016 at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, and brainstorm ideas, gather input and team up with relevant organizations within the field. We had a short introduction, and thereafter were split up into four different groups, being: economic empowerment, education, women’s rights and gender equality, and health - which DAWIDA participated in. We then had to introduce ourselves and the organization and what we were interested in and/or currently working on, in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This is where I felt the pressure being put on, and suddenly my normally quite confident self, became a nervous, panicked one! I had to speak in front of a large group, IN Danish and thereafter network and approach others in order to initiate a working partnership. This type of interaction is very new for me, and a little intimidating, however I felt it was an excellent opportunity to take those first steps out of my safe, student zone and into the professional world. My blood pressure dropped a little after some time passed as we broke out into smaller groups and discussed our passion, interests and goals for empowering women and girls. It was a great feeling to be part of a group who fights for the same causes and have so much knowledge within the field.
It was also very interesting to observe others who clearly have so much experience been in the field for several years, and watch how they interact and network, knowing exactly what to say, when and how!
My lessons learnt this week are that the phase of going from a student to a professional isn’t always pleasant, and growing pains are a must when transitioning from one world to another in order to develop and boost confidence for the journey ahead. I foresee many more growing pains ahead, and am prepared to take them on as challenges for further development as a professional in the field of nutrition and health promotion.
