On March 4th, 2018, I had the chance to be a part of history: The First Women’s March in Bandung. Yesterday’s march was for the 2015/16 me that thought everything that went wrong in my life was because of me—because I’m a woman. I wish someone had said to me that it wasn’t my fault and I don’t have to carry the pain alone in the dark. So, yesterday, I be it. I told women it’s not their fault nor they should be ashamed of what happened. We’re all beautifully flawed in our own way and that’s what made us decent human.
Bandung was filled with cheers, chants, and signs demanding what shouldn’t have been demanded in the first place. It’s about equal rights. It’s about human’s rights. We’re not afraid when privileged people honked their car horns or even crashed their bicycle at us, it only pushed us to harder to voice our thoughts.
My friends, I know we still have a long way to go but at least we’re not afraid to start it. The overwhelming feelings almost made me cried yesterday, because everyone was so accepting and this is what we could have been; strangers protecting and helping each others instead of assaulting and abusing one another. People being so humble and nice, hugging, talking, and taking photos with each others without feeling like they could be in danger in the next second, and no one hates on the person around them just because they’re different from the majority.
It’s been an honor to have worked alongside so many amazing people with various backgrounds for this event. Although the time we spent was short, barely a month but you guys feel like my long lost friends. I hope to see these faces again in the near future and hopefully, next year!
