Chapter 2
Summary: Palho was sent to kill you and it did not go as planned at all.
Notes: all mistakes on my own, because Bae Nara deserves more love, I’ll be writing more fics with his characters :)
Chapter 1
Just as you stepped onto the road, you heard tires squealing. A car peels onto the road and barrels towards you.
It was a younger guy that was texting on his phone, completely unaware that you were walking in front of him.
You lifted your hand but quickly stopped yourself. This wasn’t a car in the junkyard that you could just zap away. This was a real car with a real person.
It was in this moment that you realized you depended on your powers way too much. The guy looks up and attempts to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting you. Just as you thought he would hit you, a pair of strong arms pulled you back.
You landed on a warm chest followed by a faint clank of something hitting metal. The tail end of the car spun and swerved in your direction. You moved to hold your hand out but Palho covered it with his gloved hand.
With the other hand, he pushed the car to drive straight again. The two of you made eye contact as you caught your breath. The back of your head rested on his inner arm as he still held your right hand. Neither of you said anything or moved at first.
The car door opening caught Palho’s attention. He kept you in his arms as the man approached.
“Are you alright? I am so sorry!” The man asks.
“I should call the police and tell them you were texting and driving.” Palho started.
“I’m so so sorry! Please don’t.”
“It’s not me you should be apologizing to,”
You looked at Palho again, attempting to sit up, wincing at the soreness on your side.
“I deeply apologize. Please go to the hospital and be seen.” The man begs.
“I’m alright,” you slowly start to stand up but Palho stops you.
“Get lost. And don’t let me find you here again,” Palho threatens the man, motioning him to walk back to his car.
Palho then stands up from the ground, dusting off his pants before reaching his hand out to help you up.
“Where does it hurt?” He asks you when you get back on your feet.
“My back feels sore. But that’s about it.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah,”
He examines your body for any cuts or bruises and your gaze fell to the gash on his cheek.
“You’re hurt,” you pointed to the cheek.
“I’ll be fine.”
“You need an ointment so it doesn’t get infected,”
Without thinking, you took his hand and walked down the street. He lets you lead him to your house. You pulled away from his hand to unlock the door.
The two of you walked inside, “Sit down at the dining room table. I’ll be right back,” you instructed.
You beelined for the bathroom where you kept the first aid kit. When you walked back to the living room to still find him standing by the front door still.
“What are you doing?” You looked at him quizzically.
“I’ve never been in here before,” he says, looking around your house. You’ve made the realization that he’s right.
You’ve kept things professional because he’s helping to repay a debt. You’ve made the boundaries very clear. No house visits. No late night phone calls. No personal talk.
And now, you were breaking the first and third boundary.
“Sit down,” you pulled out a chair and motioned to it. He complied and you opened the first aid kit to take out some ointment.
You put on a pair of latex gloves before opening up a disinfectant wipe, you wiped around the wound gently. Thankfully, it didn’t look like it would require stitches.
“I would have killed him, didn’t I?” You spoke quietly.
He looks at you, not responding at first.
“My abilities can’t ever be gentle like yours, would it?” You asked him.
“My abilities aren’t gentle,”
You set the wipe on the table and ripped open a sterile qtip.
“They can be,” you spared him a glance before squirting some ointment on the back of your gloved hand.
You smoothed some ointment onto the qtip and spread it around the wound, slowly getting closer with each swab.
“You lifted your hand and pushed the car back to driving straight. If I lifted my hand, he would have gone into shock and died.” He watches you as you spoke.
It was very clear that you were distraught about what happened. And he wondered if part of it was because he got injured protecting you.
“I’m dangerous. No wonder why you were sent to kill me.” His gaze snapped to yours at what you just said.
“I never believed that you were dangerous,”
“You don’t have to lie to me to make me feel better,”
You set the bloody qtip back into the wrap and reached over to find a medium sized bandage with gauze.
“I have no reason to lie. Any power is dangerous in the wrong hands. You choosing not to use yours because of the risk of hurting someone else, proves the opposite.” He explains and you pondered his words for a moment.
You applied the bandage to his forehead and took the packaging to throw away in the trash can. You took off your latex gloves and threw them away as well.
You leaned your back against the dining room table, letting out a sigh as you crossed your arms. He stood from the chair and took your hands into his, lifting them so your palms were facing up. The action pulled you closer to him, your body inches from his.
“These hands have killed hundreds of people. Your hands killed no one. Who really has the dangerous power here?” You looked up at him, your gaze softening as he continued to hold your hands.
“I almost killed you,” you said lightheartedly.
“You were well within your right. I tried to kill you.”
“We said kill a lot of times in this conversation,” you joked and he looks down at your hands to hide his smile. Meeting your gaze, his breathing turned shaky.
“This is a bad idea,” he suggestion, still not pulling away from you.
“I don’t care,” you closed the gap between you and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. You leaned against the table and he followed you.
Your hands found the back of his neck when he lifted you onto the table and stood between your legs.
You deepened the kiss, pulling him closer by his neck. His hands rested on either side of you and that’s when you noticed the table starting to shake. Pulling away, you looked at him questioningly.
“Was that you?”
“I haven’t kissed anyone in a really long time,”
“So you make the ground shake when you’re nervous?” You teased.
He didn’t say anything but the tips of ears turning red told you everything you needed to know. The clap of thunder made the two of you jump and he looked at you skeptically when he heard the rain drops start pattering on the roof of the house.
“Was that you?” He repeats your question and you shook your no.
He leans in to press a kiss on your nape of your neck and you sucked in a breath. Just as you did that, another clap of thunder traveled through the sky. You met each other embarrassed gaze, hating how hot your cheeks felt.
“Maybe we should stop then?” He suggests and you nodded hesitantly.
He pulls away from you and slides his hands into his pockets as he stood a foot away from you. You looked at each other in silence, daring the other person to make another move.
“I’ll see you around,” he tells you before opening and closing your front door. Letting out a long breath, you laid on the desk with your legs dangling over the edge.
**
You haven’t seen Palho in a few weeks. It’s probably for the best anyway, but you couldn’t shake this feeling that something was wrong. You chose to ignore it because you didn’t want to overstep. It’s not like you were a couple or anything.
Maybe he was supposed to be in your life to train you and move on. You slowly returned to your normal life; going on your weekly runs and going out with your friends after work.
Then one night when you were walking home, you saw a man wearing a familiar hoodie. It looked like Palho, but the street was dark and the hoodie hid his face so you couldn’t be sure.
The man breathed short, shallow breaths as if he was in pain. The man finally pulls his hoodie down and it was Palho.
“I didn’t know where else to go,” he spoke, clutching his side in pain.
You knelt beside him as you asked, “Who did this to you?”
“An old friend,”
“I wouldn’t call that a friend. Come on,” you extended a hand to him, using all your strength to get him standing.
You drapes his arm over your shoulders and walk over to the front door to unlock it. Once the door opens, he limps over to your couch and collapses onto the cushion with a pained groan.
You locked the front door behind you and set your purse down on the nearest table. You kneeled down in front of him as he tries to sit up.
“Are you bleeding?” You asked him, your eyes scanning him for any visible wounds.
He unzips his hoodie and you gasped at the sight of his wound. That was a lot of blood.
From the looks of it, something punctured his side and he pulled it out.
“We need to take you to the hospital,”
“A wound like this will draw too much attention,”
“Yes, it would. Rightfully so. I’ve taken a few first aid classes but I’m not a nurse.”
“I need you to seal the wound,”
“How am I going to do that, Palho?” You said with frustration.
He reaches for your hand and pulls it so it hovers over the wound.
“I can’t,” you shook your head, attempting to pull away but he keeps his hand over yours.
“I don’t want to hurt you,”
“You’re my only hope right now.” He pleads and you pressed your lips together nervously.
“How long do I have to go for?”
“Only for a few seconds,”
You held his gaze for a moment and he gives you a brief nod. You placed a shaky hand over the wound and let out a deep breath, closing your eyes to help you focus. Your hand tingled the longer you closed your eyes and you heard a faint zap.
Your eyes snapped open when you heard him groans in pain. Electricity shot out from your palm and traveled into his side, the skin sizzled upon contact.
He had a white knuckle grip on the couch as he attempts to hold in his disdain.
“I’m sorry,” you tried to pull away.
“Not yet,” he grunts out.
You turned your face away as the heat from the electricity continued to close the skin together. You let it continue for a few more seconds before stopping.
Palho sinks into the couch, closing his eyes with fatigue. His neck and chest were drenched in sweat.
Whoever he fought must have been really strong.
“I’ll patch it up. Just stay here.”
By the time you came back with the first aid kit, he was already fast asleep. You sat in the table next to the couch, bringing the first aid kit into your lap as you examined him. His chest rises and falls with each breath, his face mellowed with sleep.
You raised your hand to brush some strands of his hair out of his face and he subconsciously turns into your hand. He relaxes further into the couch, shifting his legs up to lay flat on his back.
“What did you get yourself into?” You whispered.
**
By the time Palho woke up, you had left for work. He winced as he sat up, clutching his side as he looks around the empty house.
He hadn’t realized that he slept that long. Looking down, he saw that you tucked him in with a fleece blanket with pink teddy bears on it and he smiled.
He could still smell the remnants of your perfume from a few hours before. Peering into the kitchen, there was a note prop against a glass of water with pills next to it. He slowly stands from the couch to notice his side was bandaged up.
You took care of him while he was sleeping. He couldn’t help but think back to when you kissed him. He looks over at the dining room table at the thought, remembering when you were propped onto it with him between your legs.
He pushed those thoughts away and advanced into the kitchen. Taking the note into his gloved hands, he read the message you left:
“Be sure to eat the breakfast I made before taking these. It’s in the microwave. I’ll be back around 2 pm.”*
He rereads the message, memorizing the sharp curves on your gs. He slowly walks to the microwave and takes out a plate of rice, sunny side up egg, some kimchi and pickled cucumbers.
His stomach growled angrily at the comforting scent of your food. He can’t remember that last time someone cooked for him, let alone took care of him. He poured himself a glass of water before sitting at the dining room table.
As he sat down, he noticed a pair of clean clothes neatly folded on the table. It was a pair of sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt. He wondered why you bought such large clothes for someone with a smaller frame.
He did his best to savor the food, but he ended up inhaling it within minutes. He cleaned his dishes and set them to dry in the dish rack before taking the clothes and advancing to the bathroom.
He was met with the scene of lemon and sugar when he walks into the bathroom. He wasn’t at all surprised to see the bathroom spic and span. The bathroom curtains, towels and bath mats matched a beige and black theme.
He ran the shower and sighed as the steaming hot water ran over his face. Palho hasn’t felt this relaxed in a long time.
Truth be told, he didn’t enjoy being alone. But he knew that you would be home soon and that helped move things along.
It felt domesticated when he thought that. But that didn’t make it untrue. By the time you came home, Palho had taken a nap. He didn’t even realize he fell asleep until he opened them when he heard your keys in the lock.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” you greeted, slipping off your shoes and padding into the living room as he sits up.
“A little sore,” he said, looking up at you from the couch.
You looked very professional with your satin blouse and a long pencil skirt. But Palho couldn’t keep his eyes away from yours. He realized that he hasn’t seen you wear mascara before.
“Thank you. For taking care of me.” He adds.
“You’re welcome,” you stated as you sat down on the table directly in front of him like you did last night.
“If you’re in trouble, I can help.” You added genuinely.
“I’m not going to drag you into my mess, Y/N.” He advocates.
“You trained me how to fight. So let me fight with you.”
He shook his head no and you sighed audibly.
“So what? I’m supposed to just nurse you back to health for you to go back out there again. What if you don’t make to me in time?”
He lips parted at your question. Back to me. Meaning he was yours.
“Are you questioning my strength?”
“It has nothing to do with strength and everything to do with strategy. That’s how the rabbit beats the fox.” You explained.
“And you want to be my rabbit?”
You held his gaze for a moment, “I want to level the plain field.”
“You trust your capabilities?”
“I trust what you taught me. The only thing that I know electricity can’t destroy is rubber. So I like my odds.”
He was tempted to hold your face in his hands, not to kiss you, but to feel the warmth of your body against his.
“We can talk about this a little later. I’m going to take a shower.” You stood from the table but he caught your hand, causing you to turn back to face him.
“I like your makeup,” he spoke softly, not missing the smile on your face.
“I wasn’t sure if you’d notice,”
“I always notice,”
His words made your cheeks feel hot. You stood directly in front of him and he breathes in the scent of your perfume.
“I’m worried that I’ll get used to this,” he admits, using his other hand to brush some hairs out of your face.
“Used to what?”
“The intimacy,” he adds after a few moments of silence.
You wrapped your arms around his neck, slowly leaning in to pressed a long kiss to his cheek.
“I wouldn’t consider that a bad thing,” you hesitantly pulled away and advanced into your bedroom.
Palho finds himself reaching for you when you pulled away, sinking back into the couch as he made the realization that he was developing a pit in his stomach that sank each time he saw you.
