They were standing on a small patch of grass by the side of the road facing away from the white-painted cottages. He watched parents drive their children down to the beach seeing their animated expressions through the car windows. His friend stared intently at his phone having become easily distracted from their conversation, cutting him off mid-sentence to focus on an urgent message from the city. They wouldn’t be alone for long, he thought. Fresh beads of sweat were creeping slowly down his face as he rubbed his hand over his crew cut, worried that his scalp would burn in the sun. He glanced at his borrowed racket, twisting the rough edges of the red-tape grip that was slightly discoloured in his hand becoming disheartened at the thought of chasing Patrick’s superior strokes around a shade less court for the afternoon. He had been so grateful for the invitation down to the beach house, if only for a week. It was a welcome retreat from rotting in the leaden atmosphere of Dublin where he had lost count of the days, angry at himself for being so bored. At the same time, he was clinging to every passing minute as August approached. With August came thoughts of school and dreary weather.
