A deciduous tree with heart shaped leaves Idesia polycarpa (igiri, wonder tree) has a tiered horizontal branch structure. This species is dioecious and both male and female plants must be grown if bunches of pendulous berries are to be produced. These turn bright red through winter and are not eaten by birds remaining on the tree until spring. In the autumn the leaves turn a clear yellow with deep pink petioles.
