Thunderstorm just rolled in.
At the height of the real estate bubble in 2008, two lots on Woodroffe avenue at the corner of Richmond road were bought up. Four years later, the owners of the combined lot applied for a zoning amendment to build a 14-storey condo apartment building, and later announced that construction would begin in “Spring 2015″. 2015 passed without any sign of construction starting. And after a couple of years, the sales trailer on the lot was finally demolished.
Now, with "The Azure" condo project long dead, a new 19-storey rental apartment building (which will require a zoning amendment) is being proposed.
It’s been interesting watching the ill-concieved condo project next door (I live in the building in the background of the second photo) flounder. The property was bought when credit was criminally easy for developers to secure, and Ottawa’s condo market was already bloated beyond the point of sustainability. Other condo projects in more desireable neighbourhoods were having trouble securing investors, and it was no surprise when “The Azure” finally failed.
I have no idea if the folks behind this new proposal are the same ones who bought the property almost ten years ago, but I’ll be following this with interest. Rental apartments are something that Ottawa actually needs.
