Cloth Is Just A Gateway To Wool
When we found out we were having a baby and I started researching cloth diapers, I stumbled upon the wool fanatics. My mind was already too busy decoding the diapering acronyms, that I couldn't even comprehend delving into the world of lanolizing.
Fast forward about a year - the night diapering system we'd been using (a fitted diaper - usually a Tot's Bots Bamboozle with a Thirsties cover) had begun to have some issues. Mainly, the small person would wake up really red and chafed. She's a heavy wetter at night and the PUL of the Thirsties cover (while effective) just keeps all that moisture contained and heats everything up...sort of like a lovely compost heap. When you take that diaper off in the morning you can feel the warmth radiating from it.
Wool has worked out perfectly in our situation. While it does require a bit of special care, it isn't really time consuming. You just have to learn the proper way to wash it, lanolize it and set it to dry. The perks far outweigh the maintenance as it only has to be washed every 2 weeks as long as it stays poop free! It's highly breathable, absorbent and antibacterial - and it's a great choice for heavy wetters. If you're handy, you can find all sorts of patterns to make your own woolies (or if you're like me, you can buy them off of crafty etsy vendors!)
In my next post, I'll let you know how I care for our wool covers.
