Darkness
A flicker of light, then a few glorious moments of light jerked Jonty from her train of thought. She pulled her sweater off, flinging socks onto the cold floor, falling onto it, limbs spread out. Keep limbs spread out, let your skin absorb as much light as possible. She would only have a few precious minutes of light, just like every other time it came on, usually only a few times each day. This brief stretch of light was under ten minutes, Jonty estimated, the average for most times they gave her light. Otherwise she would be going back to the usual dim light they gave her.
The light soon faded again, still leaving Jonty in her small, cramped room. A barely functioning cracked sink stood in one corner of the room, a bucket stowed underneath it. An old mattress provided bedding, which while it was preferable to sleeping on the floor, it still was not much more comfortable. Jonty had no mirror in the room, she had no idea what she looked like. She hadn’t seen her reflection for years; although she tried to keep her appearance presentable, her clothes were still torn and dirty, and her hair definitely needed a cut and a wash with actual shampoo.
Life was monotonous. Jonty tried to keep positive about it though. She had been brave enough to create a brief light earlier in the day, small and secretive, illuminating the room for a few minutes, bathing her in light. That was her one guilty pleasure, while they kept her in darkness to stop her from using her powers, it still did not mean Jonty could not occasionally use them.
The only interesting event of the week happened on Sundays. The one day when she was let out of her room. They insisted Jonty kept herself as covered up as possible, to reduce the light she was exposed to. Jonty was able to see other people though. Not just isolation for another afternoon.
Sunday afternoons were the one time, where for a few hours, all the children and teenagers were let out of their rooms, and allowed to ‘socialise’. Jonty never considered it proper socialising, they were watched, usually told to do certain tasks, but it beat sitting alone, and gave her a chance to talk to normal people.
Well, except most other people could not be considered normal. Everyone had something dark hanging over them.
Jonty did try her hardest to talk to people, but most people did not want to talk. Alphie and Meg clung to each other, it was impossible to find one without the other. Alphie was a bundle of ragged dark hair and nerves. They wore round glasses, which their huge brown eyes seemed to get lost in. Meg was the opposite, where Alphie’s hair was curly, his hair long, black and limp. Meg was short, compared to Alphie as well, a chubby barrel shaped boy, sturdy in comparison to Alphie, or so Jonty had initially though. His reaction to bright light seemed to confirm how much they needed each other though. Meg curling up, eyes and nose scrunching together, and Alphie curling around them, pushing them towards a darkened corner.
Today Jonty wanted to talk to Poppy. Poppy was older than Jonty by a year, and like everyone else, insisted her name was Jones. Poppy was solid, that was the word Jonty thought of when she thought about Poppy. Sturdy in personality, she always seemed calm, and sturdy in build, broad shoulders, and although she insisted she had never worked out, she had a sturdy muscular frame, the opposite to Jonty’s own tall lanky body.
Poppy was sat on her own, like usual, sitting on the top of a bench, legs resting on the seat. Jonty approached her quietly, making sure to walk in front of her before she took a seat next to her.
‘Hey’, she said softly, bringing her legs up to also lean on the seat.
Poppy gave a grunt. ‘Whad’ya want? Gotta problem like the rest of them Jones?’
Jonty shrugged. ‘Not really. Anything wrong with wanting to talk to someone?’
‘No. But maybe I don’t wanna talk to anyone?’
‘Okay then. Can I sit here still?’
‘Free country Jones. Or free bench I guess. Ain’t a free country, it’s gone to the dogs.’ Jonty could hear the faint crackle of electricity, and she knew if she looked down at Poppy’s arms, jolts of electricity might be running along it. She sent out a warning flash of light, and Poppy took a deep breath.
‘Yeah, I forget. Stupid dogs, making me wear these bleeding gloves.’ Poppy muttered dryly. Jonty gave a half-hearted laugh.
‘Yeah. They must be annoying. Better than being kept in darkness though.’
‘Give it a rest Jones. They don’t always keep you in darkness. Ain’t that bad.’ Poppy gave her a rough shove.
‘Yeah, yeah. I’m just exaggerating,’ Jonty muttered, looking downcast. She looked up, smiling, ‘yeah, it’s not too bad at all. I’m just having a pity party for myself at the moment. Hopefully they’ll get you out of those soon.’
Poppy nodded, smiling slightly as well. ‘Thanks for keeping me safe from the dogs though Jones. I owe you one.’
Jonty shook her head. ‘It’s no big deal! You’d have done the same for me.’
‘We’re all against the dogs together, yeah?’
‘Yeah, we are. So cheer up, you always look so downcast Jones, you ain’t got to deal with that much crap.’
‘Yeah, y-you’re right. I’ll try and remember that.’ Jonty got up slowly, robotically. ‘I’ll see you later. I was gonna talk to Beat quick before the afternoons up.’
‘Alright Jones. See you soon.’
‘Yeah, I hope so,’ Jonty said, not looking bothering to look behind her, walking forwards.
