Since birth Myla had wondered if she was lucky or unlucky, she supposed anyone could argue either for them self and it was a debate she ticked off side by side. She was alive, lucky. She was alive, unlucky. She could counter each occurrence in her life just like that. She had foster parents, lucky. She had foster parents, unlucky. She wished that for once, not everything was a sharp double edged sword- she’d thought that Isaac was that. But when she’d ended his infected ravaged body, she realized very suddenly that he’d only been disguised as something good in her life, something she’d be unlucky to lose.
Myla’s stomach growled in reply to a cabinet creaking open, letting out stale air and a can too close to a shelves edge. She dodged it narrowly, hearing it smack down on the kitchen tile. The sound was deafening in contrast with the quiet, a silence that only belonged to the dead. Or what used to be the dead. She cringed at the sound, her fingernails poking nervously into the palms over her hands and her lips tightly smashed together in fear that something would make a sound back. She was relieved to hear nothing at all, this had to be lucky.
She found a can opener and ripped off the lid, drinking the sweet juice of peaches and devouring them with her finger. The nectar ran down her arms and she lifted herself onto the counter to see the back of the cabinet more clearly. A thin glass bottle was tucked neatly away in the far end, hiding from anyone irresponsible enough to find. She opened the cap and took a swig, cheap vodka, lucky or unlucky?
