On Wuju Festivities
A Headcanon Post Brought to you by a Yi of 25 Years Ago
“It is, what, 2 CLE? (or whichever calendar you use it does not matter to me) My disciples are a ten to fifteen years old, so they may not remember, or will not listen to, what I say probably, but I will say it anyway for those who want to listen. You wish to know about Wuju celebrations? That is easy to talk about, since there are only two of them in the year. We do not celebrate often, but when we do it is usually a good time!
The first festival of the year comes, obviously, in the early moons. It is called the Day of Faces, and is basically a big excuse for people to get drunk, sing songs, and watch Wuju Masters tell overblown stories on stage. You see, when your School is filled with near immortal men who get bored in their old ages, they tend to write a lot of stories they wish to share with people. These stories come in the form of dramas that are acted out in pairs, with face paints and swordplay.
The true draw of Wuju Stageplay is that they are not so much plays as they are battles. We tell the same stories over and over, but the stories always have two different endings. Somewhere during the play there is an actual confrontation that the Wuju Practitioners must partake in. Depending on who wins, the story can go one way or the other way. People come to see if the drama changes from last time they saw it.
People sell their creative works in the street too, and there are many little competitions that go on. Judgements of sculptures, paintings, dancing, spoken history; all of these things. Talents are on display everywhere... at least until people are so drunk we must fish them out of the river before they drown! No one has drowned yet, at least in my life. I suppose if you had to drown anywhere though, the river of the Wuju Village is a good place to do it. A lot of important people have, ah... drowned in that river, over time.
But it is a good day if you are creatively inclined. A lot of the contests are run by people outside of the Wuju School. Really we are just another attraction in the day, but that is not to say we do not value it. Wuju is as much about fighting as it is about appreciating this world we find ourselves in. That is how I see it at least. Though with these kids following me around I am not sure how well I can appreciate some of the handsome dancers and their muscle but we will see how that goes.
Now, the next festival is the most important one. At least it is to me. It comes later in the year, about half a year after Day of Faces (or as close as we can figure. The moon is fickle), and it is called the Day of Blades. We are not very creative in how we name our holidays, but I digress. It is a day truly devoted to the mastery of the blade, and for any Wuju student it is the day you may come to dread in your schooling.
But it is all in good fun. Any swordsman who knows of the festival comes to the village. Most of them do not get drunk this time. Instead, they polish their blades and they ready themselves for a tournament the likes of which has no equal in Shon-Xan. Even in Ionia as a whole! It serves both as a competition, a demonstration of the Wuju school’s power… and as a way to judge the bladesmanship of all those currently enrolled.
You may wonder: What is this competition? I am glad you asked that! It is a one to one fight, and in truth you may bring any weapon into this fight so long as it is only a single one. You step into a circle, perfectly measured to be enough room to allow for free-form combat, and in it you do whatever it is you wish. To win, all you need do is either get your enemy to step out of the circle, or you need to mark him in such a way that draws blood. Even the smallest bit of blood. Even if you accomplish this without drawing your sword, and you merely debate your opponent until he bleeds.
Of course it is meant to be a contest of blades, but this is Wuju after all. If you can be Aware enough to best your opponent in ways other than steel, then you are welcome in our home. Pairs keep facing each other until only one person remains. He, or she I suppose, takes the Day for their Blade, and for their efforts they receive..!
… What is it you think they receive?
They get to sit in a special seat at the head of the Wuju Play performed that festival. The best prize, certainly! (I am being sarcastic) Even though we have a whole festival devoted to Wuju stories, Wuju Masters just like to show off. And that is it. The true winners of the day are those who examine the pairs and the bracket. Many bet upon who shall take the Day of Blades, and it is they who go away from the festival with extra goats or a horse. Though not always many goats at this point. My Master’s Master, Master Yi Heng, he has won the last nighty-four Day of Blade contests, so to bet on him will not, as you might say, receive a good payout.
But those are the two Wuju festivals of the year! Come to both of them. Eat some nice Highlander food, and drink some nice rice drinks from the eastern terraces. Ignore the Vastaya if they try to crash the party. They are attracted to the loud noise sometimes, like true daemon pests. If you see me in a Wuju Play, maybe I will even take some time to talk with you after. If you are a pretty woman from out of the Wuju Lands then doubly so. Everyone is inbred here I swear to the Stars…..”
