Similar word explanation - 혹시 and 역시
These words are not similar in meaning, but sound alike and therefore one might mix them up.
혹시 (hok-shi) - used to preface a question where the speaker expects there is a chance that the listener doesn’t know the answer. e.g. by any chance... I don’t suppose... could this be the case? Shows hesitance/uncertainty.
혹시 그 식당 이름 생각나요? - Do you happen to remember the name of that restaurant?
혹시 펜 가진 거 있어요? - Do you have a pen on you by any chance?
역시 (yeok-shi) - used when results turn out the way one expected. e.g. of course, just as I thought. Can be used on it’s own as a simple exclamation like ‘I knew it!’
역시 한국어를 잘 쓰네요 - Just as I suspected your Korean is good (~I thought this person might be good at Korean, and they proved me correct)
역시 여기 커피는 맛이 없어요 - Of course, the coffee here is not good (~I knew the coffee here would be bad, and the reality matched my expectation)
It can also be a polite way of saying ‘also’, like in this case:
저는 역시 그렇께 생각합니다 - I also think so (~likewise, of course I feel the same)
