“Wait, wait,” Gabby said, “I need to string my bow, is that a free action.”
Everyone groaned and Remy glanced at Gabby over the top of the divider, “Damien, please pass Gabby the list of free actions.”
Damien picked up the rubber chicken the box of effects they’d brought with them and whacked Gabby in the head with it before dropping it into her hands.
“What the.”
Remy glanced up and grinned, “Hi mom, welcome back.”
“What is going on in here?” His mom asked as she walked into the dining room.
“Dungeons and dragons,” Remy said.
“Well technically, The Nexxus is a homebrewed RPG, not a pre-written one,” Damien said.
“You asked me to stick around today, so we thought we’d do a one-shot mission to kill time,” Remy said. “We’re about to have the boss fight with General Verras for the Totem of Javor.”
“Well don’t forget, you have a doctor’s appointment in an hour,” his mom said, “I’m going to get changed before we go.”
“We’ll wrap this up,” Remy said, eyeing his friends, “it shouldn’t take long.” He turned back to the others, “All right, General Verras is beyond the blast doors and so is the totem.”
“I hack the doors,” Tina announced as she dropped her dice on the table. “One.”
“You not only fail to unlock the doors,” Remy said, “but you’ve activated the magnetic locks and blew out the keypad in the process.”
Confession, I don’t actually have any experience playing table top RPGs. This is based on A- a desire to have a rubber chicken in a scene, B- a play on their on-going excuse for being overheard talking about Nexxus stuff as “It’s an RPG we play”, and C- probably won’t have an actual gaming related session in the books but the idea kind of hung out in my brain anyways.
Remy regarded Terry solemnly for a long moment, “You know, I still don’t know why you’ve suddenly decided that Jessie and I are dating.”
“Because lately you do a lot of things with her?” Terry replied wryly. “You’re always mentioning plans or outings with her.”
Remy considered for a moment, it was true, he did make plans to spend time with Jessie. They did a lot of training together, to better react in tense situations, and they also spent time mapping out plans for future missions, planned for trouble.
“We’re building an RPG story together,” Remy said out loud, “part of our Nexxus campaign. Jessie’s really good at figuring out prompts for when Gabby roles to seduce the most unlikely person in the story.”
“I still don’t know how you got into that stuff,” Terry said.
“Damien,” Remy said, “people never believe he’s as big a nerd as he is. Mom likes it because there’s little chance of setting my brain off.”
“It’s been a while for that, hasn’t it?” Terry said.
“We had the blood sugar scare in June, but nothing since then,” Remy replied happily, “getting off that medication has worked wonders.”
“I noticed,” Terry said, “I’m glad for you.”
Remy got up and dug out the Nexxus RPG binder, “So, what to help me come up with another character for the RPG? I want to see if I can derail them before we get to the next boss fight.”
“Sure,” Terry said, “sounds like fun!”
“Can I ask you something?”
Jessie glanced at Mark and back down to her shoes, “You may.”
“Why do you always braid your hair?” Mark said, “I never see you just wear it loose, it’s always up.”
Jessie closed her eyes for a moment, counting like her anger management therapist had suggested.
“Because it serves a purpose,” Jessie said, “I prefer it up most of the time because then it won’t get tangled up or look like a bird’s nest. When it’s in a braid or a twist or a bun, it’s controlled, and it looks good.” Jessie tugged at her left slipper, running a finger over the heel for a moment.
“But it would look better,” Mark began.
Screw therapy, Jessie thought as she stood up and fisted her hand in Mark’s shirt, dragging him close to her and off balance, “It’s none of your damn business how I wear my hair. If you want long hair, then grow your own.” She pushed, letting him stagger back. “I’m not your anything, and you don’t get a say in what I do with my hair. That’s the way the world works.”
