Catherine & Jackson
S1e2 Work Drinks
My rambling thoughts on why Slow Horses isn't about Catherine & Jackson, but also why... Slow Horses is ALL about Catherine & Jackson... (please feel free to chime in with thoughts, ideas, feelings, etc)
1. Lamb, again, by the window, cigarette in his mouth and a lighter in his hand, jiggles the window until it opens.
a. Standish, walks into his office to announce, “There’s no sign of Cartwright, and he’s not answering his phone.”
i. He does not look at her.
b. Standish glances at his desk and pauses, looking back at him at the window before asking “What’s wrong?”
i. That you’re still here talking to me for starters – Lamb. (again, doesn’t spare her a glance)
1. Classic Lamb – pushing others away, acting glib.
ii. No, it’s mid-morning, and you haven’t had a drink yet. – Standish.
1. She pays absolutely no mind to his complaint that she’s still there, because of course she’s still there, where else would she be?!
iii. Lamb finally looks at her, while turning back towards his desk. “Why, in the old days you’d be on your third stomach pump by now” – Lamb.
1. She started it? With the mention of a drink… he just followed that vein.
iv. That’s your first taunt of the morning. You’re slipping. Something is definitely up. – Standish
1. Standish is completely able to disregard his taunt, makes one wonder, is it just because he said it and who is he to taunt about a “drink” when he’s still an alcoholic and she’s changed her ways? Or is it just because it’s Lamb and she recognizes that’s just how he communicates – pushes everyone away but truly appreciates who is loyal.
2. Standish slides a piece of paperwork onto the middle of Lamb’s desk.
v. It’s a bit late for getting good at spotting your boss’s moods. – Lamb, while smirking, and putting his socked feet up on his desk, looking at her like he’s proud of himself for coming up with that one.
c. Standish ignores his comment. Frowns at something on his desk and says “This shouldn’t be in here.” She grabs files and turns to leave.
i. I think it’s interesting that she could take the taunts about herself… you’re still here? You’d be on your third stomach pump, … but when he brings up Partner, … Standish walks away.
d. When Cartwright comes back, tie him to his desk by his bollocks. – Lamb
i. He fixes his gaze on her while emphasizing – I want my people in here, doing nothing – Lamb.
1. I think this is especially true with her as he wants her there, for him, at his beck and call, and within reach, so as to be able to protect her from anything or anyone. Whenever she attempts to help – he immediately tries to remind her that she’s his … to do as he commands… more specifically … to do NOTHING, unless he’s asked for something.
ii. Lamb crinkles up whatever paperwork she’d left on his desk and she is seen ducking away from his office quietly.
2. Lamb is seen is his office, smoking, but also biting his nails… something is amiss.
3. Standish is seen in the kitchen, turning on the kettle, but her mind is elsewhere…
a. My own observation here is that again, Lamb’s barbs and insults towards her, personally, slipped right off like water on a duck’s back; however, his mention of Partner, sent her spiraling down these dark memories…
b. Again, we see her remembering walking into Partner’s home as before, only this time, as she’s walking in and calling out to him, she’s not alone.
i. He’s in the bath. – Lamb
ii. You are? – Standish
iii. Jackson, seen smoking and looking out the window turns around to look at her and simply says “Lamb.”
iv. Charles Parter is seen walking down the hall with an undone tie around his neck.
1. Morning, Catherine. Think I heard you shouting about breakfast. – Partner.
v. Standish stands there looking up at Partner as Partner realizes that they’re not alone.
vi. Jackson. I thought you were in Berlin. – Partner
vii. Berlin is blown. – Lamb
1. What does this moment mean for Catherine? Was this the first time she met Jackson Lamb? Is this the ONLY time she met Jackson Lamb, prior to his murdering Charles Partner? When Lamb says it’s a little late to be spotting her bosses’ mood, is she trying to remember if Partner was showing signs of depression, of burnout, of despair, of desperate suicidal ideation? What?
4. Kettle clicks and we’re back to the current day where Catherine has just made herself a cup of tea and quietly enters a large room with piles of junk everywhere. Struan, Louisa and Min- are watching the news about the hostage situation.
a. She is noticed by Struan and attempts to get away from him.
b. He asks her to buy some raffle tickets for his daughter’s school and she agrees, in order to get rid of him.
c. She hears the door and stuffs the ticket in her pocket, walking into Roddy’s office to find Cartwright.
i. River, where were you? – Standish
ii. River is glib about the air being fetid and lies about Roddy helping him out with an IT issue.
iii. Catherine doesn’t buy it, but also doesn’t want to argue about it.
iv. Where’s Moody? – Standish
v. Roddy is visibly irritated and starts to say “I’m not his – “
vi. Bitch. Yes, got it – Standish
vii. She turns around and walks out.
5. Jackson is seen smoking in his office. Feet up on something.
a. River’s back. – Standish
b. Where was he? – Lamb
c. He said he went out for some air; I didn’t push it. The rest are accounted for, except Moody. – Standish
i. She keeps her eyes down for the most part, kind of ready to get out the door but staying because something is still “wrong.”
d. Jackson is distracted, thumping his lighter against his desk.
i. You’re not just worried about River though, are you? – Standish
ii. Do you think it’s a coincident that Diana Taverner ran a special op on a right-wing reject just as some prick nationalists kidnapped a brown kid? – Lamb
1. Standish is seen considering his question for a moment before moving to respond.
iii. Well – Standish
iv. That was rhetorical – Lamb.
1. Standish shuts up immediately and turns to go back to her office.
2. So, Lamb likes to think aloud but refuses any consideration from his personal assistant!
6. STANDISH! – Lamb (4th floor, Aldersgate office)
a. Standish is seen slowly walking from her office to Lamb’s, pausing at the doorway after spotting him by the window.
b. Yeah, I’d hang back if I were you. God. I have just let one rip It’s a killer. – Lamb.
i. **he doesn’t give anyone else advance warning!!
ii. Standish is seen easing back slightly but waiting at the doorway for instructions.
c. Get me Taverner on the phone. – Lamb
i. Standish gives a polite smile and nod before heading to her office to make the call.
d. Struan approaches her near the stairs and reminds her that he is there for payment for the raffle tickets. He approaches the Boss Man, who immediately responds with Piss off.
e. Jackson pours himself a drink. Struan makes faces in the doorway.
f. Connecting you now – Standish
g. *phone rings in Lamb’s office* - Dickhead, I have a call. – Lamb
h. Call doesn’t go through. Standish pays Loy outside of Lamb’s office while listening in. Loy mentions Cartwright leaving early. Lamb questions and then tells Loy to Fuck Off.
i. Observation– Lamb is listening to/ watching for Standish at all times, even while on phone with Park.
i. Catherine looks into Lamb’s office where he’s just taken a shot of whiskey. She takes a step in his direction and sees that he’s got his hand on another glass, with another shot of whiskey in it. Lamb picks it up without a second thought, then looks up to realize Standish is watching him. With the whiskey in his hand, he raises his eyebrows and offers her the glass.
i. Standish shakes her head no and walks back to her office.
ii. Lamb is seen taking the second shot of whiskey.
7. Standish is seen leaving her office, turning off the lights, coat and scarf on – ready to leave for the day. Her hands are carrying a stack of files as she heads towards Lamb’s office. It appears Lamb is sleeping, with a still smoking cigarette in the ashtray. Standish quietly places the stack of files on Lamb’s desk, tapping them gently with one finger before deciding to stub out the lit cigarette in the overflowing ashtray.
a. Just an observation, but this is her way… it’s not just a job, it’s her job. So, it’s not just putting the files on his desk and calling it a day; it’s putting the files on his desk, noticing the lit cigarette and stubbing it out because that’s taking care of him (Lamb).
b. Get me Ho – Lamb
c. Standish turns around, nearly at the door to his office.
i. I think he’s gone – Standish
ii. Then get him back – Lamb
d. Standish is seen going back to her office, turning the light on – as if to get back to work, on contacting Ho, at whatever hour of the evening this is taking place. Lamb loyalty… no matter the time of day.
You should be applauding me. I kept an eye on Hobden while you went to get your car. I should be applau--I would have stuck out, standing around on the street. Well, I didn’t.
Wearing makeup at work felt odd 😅
Have a fabulous weekend lovely people! I’m off to see my grandfather and then a couple party to celebrate my friends engagement. 🥂
Every time I go out with work I tell myself never to mix prosecco and wine. Every time I always forget and end up with the worst hangover.
Have fun with Sweeney Todd.
Good, it's not just me.
