“Discuss a time you had to perform in front of a group. Did you enjoy it? How did you feel? “
This morning I was on my first weekly call with my new team. Since I’m bringing some of my responsibilities over from my dissolving department, I was asked to explain what I do and why I do it—same stuff I’m used to explaining to people as part of the experience of that role.
I started out pretty shakily, because it’s a group video call and that just gets my nerves tingling, but as we got down to talking about the specific processes and the software I use to complete said processes, I felt like the master of my own domain again and it became a lot easier to talk about things without stuttering or feeling awkward. Sometimes I forget that I literally wrote the processes & procedures manual and am solely responsible for about 80% of that entire infrastructure at our company (discounting my assistant and a significant amount of the electronic Note stuff). They watched the software I use chugging along doing its thing while I told them about my report generators and the number of daily reports this team has been responsible for (overall, officially, there are 7 reports that we do on a daily basis). We talked about figuring out how it works and building our own in-house solution that would be smarter and faster. I’m very excited by this prospect!
It felt good to be able to talk to people who were interested in instead of confused by what they were looking at on my screen and what I was talking about, and also to feel like part of a team that easily grasped the hurdles and limitations built into this undervalued critical process for which I’ve been responsible for over 5 years now.
