Jasper Steals His Shoes

"Workman stole your shoes!"

"What?" Jasper said. His ears dropped on his head. "Why? What did I do?"

Jasper's shoes were stolen by a legendary Shoe Thief, and now he must get them back.

I have some WIPs that I'm working on cleaning up and posting. Also this is part of my "I Think Jasper Coven and Alto Patterson Should be Friends" campaign.

Workman figures out where to go, and who they’re going with. Written for Blasetober, day fourteen: Released. CW for general discussion of a teen playing blaseball.

It doesn’t occur to Workman until afterwards, and why would it? Most everyone has places to go. The Marijuanas go to New York, Lotus goes back to Boston, Tyreek and Landry go somewhere of their own. Workman’s ready to head to Halifax, or maybe Charleston, when they notice Kiki isn’t moving.

“Where are you going?” they ask, more out of curiosity than any intention to intervene.

Kiki looks suddenly hesitant, hands held carefully in front of her chest. After a second she signs, “Not sure.”

Workman frowns. The Talkers hadn’t asked about a family, or where Kiki’s from, or anything like that. She’s young, sure, but she’s a teenager, not the youngest person they’ve seen playing blaseball.

But it strikes them all over again now, seeing her chewing on her lower lip, that she’s still a kid. A kid who jumped into blaseball. A kid who’s free of the only responsibility she ever asked for.

“You could find Quack,” Workman suggests. They can’t remember the name-sign for Quack and have to finger-spell it, but they only get as far as the Q before Kiki shrugs despondently. “What’s up?”

“I wasn’t ready for something to come after,” Kiki admits. She pauses for a minute to smooth out her skirt, something that Workman is beginning to recognize as a nervous gesture, before she continues signing, “I don’t know where to go.”

“Neither do I,” Workman answers. Kiki gives them a skeptical look, so they have to add, “I definitely have a couple of ideas, don’t get me wrong. I want to hug my dog pretty bad. It’s just figuring out what’s number two on my list that’s the problem.”

Kiki nods and doesn’t say anything. Workman looks at her askance. “You want me to go with you?”

She shakes her head almost immediately. They pause, mulling it over. It wasn’t like the Talkers had had a lot of time to ask her about where she came from, about a home situation, about a family. It wasn’t like they’d had a chance to ask afterwards, either. At least Workman hadn’t.

“You want to come with me?” they ask before they can think about it.

Kiki looks at them sidelong. “Where?”

Workman shrugs. “To pet a dog. And get a hotel or something and figure things out.”

It’s a long few seconds of Kiki squinting at them, silent and sharp-eyed, before she nods. “Hotel,” she signs decisively, and Workman smiles in relief. “I want pizza.”

“Yeah, kid,” Workman signs, and they can’t help but sigh. “Let’s get some pizza.”

the hall stars showing up to wreck the shelled one was absolutely one of the best moments of blaseball so far! it was so great to see yaz and landry in action one last time.
