the department's VP, veronica, started late last year. she has never been a manager of people, only a manager of product and it shows. she had scheduled a meeting with me and my manager, jason, to discuss data (my first real meeting with her), she was 10 minutes late, which is fine- she was new, going from meeting to meeting. when she arrived, she came in hot and pissy, "next time when you schedule a meeting with me, make sure it's on the 10th floor." for clarity, veronica's office is on the 10th floor, while her team sits on the 3rd floor. i said, "oh- i believe you scheduled this meeting and conference room," and she insisted she didn't until jason finally got the balls to agree with me, i showed her on the calendar invite, she's the owner, and then she QUICKLY changed subjects. i left that meeting like "wow great first impression... angry at us for her own meeting." jason was like, "ya not great but it's her first month, let's give her some grace." i agreed. one day, she pinged me and jason to have a quick chat about an email that needs to be sent to the other VPs in the company. i jump on, jason never did... she goes over the email she wrote, asked me to create a table of the VPs and the data to include in the email. i asked if she was going to send it out or if she wanted it sent from the department's email address. she said department's email address. i asked if she wanted me to send it out that day and she said yes and thank you. i send out the email to appropriate audience and cc'd the chief of the division, kimberly (per veronica's instructions). kimberly emails me back, "this should not be coming from this email address and you should not be sending this out." i panicked and started to ping veronica but she got to me first, "why did you send that out? i was going to send it out." i said, "you said you wanted it to come from the department email and i asked you if you wanted me to send it out today." veronica, "i think there was a miscommunication because i should have been the one sending this." my heart sank. i pinged jason, who was oblivious to the whole drama, so i had to catch him up. he said he'll talk to veronica. i don't hear from either of them for the rest of the day. the next day in the office, jason and i are having our weekly meeting and he proceeds to tell me, "veronica and i had a meeting last night about you. she and kimberly thought you need to be coached and written up for this." i started crying. jason, "don't worry, i talked them out of it." i was like, "i followed veronica's instructions! this is crazy!" jason said for me to not overthink it, what's done is done. me- not overthink! from then on, i have had my guard up with veronica. and boy was i right to be cautious of her...
