Making Sure You Fix Those Damaged Areas in the Home
There are never any guarantees that things won’t go wrong in or around the house or the office where we work. Repairs to broken windows, leaking pipes and ceilings often need our attention.
The same is true for tiles as most of us have them on walls in the kitchen and the bathroom, or on our floors inside the home and often around the swimming pool, for instance. Things go wrong in bathrooms too: taps leak or break, mirrors get scratched, so do the bath, the shower tray. Looking at, for example, the shower tray with a crack in it, or a worn out patch is an example of those household issues and maintenance we always have to be aware of and keep our eyes open for.
If we do not act quickly, this could lead to other serious problems such as, for instance, leaks. These leaks can lead to other unwanted situations such as permanently growing mould, it could lead to damage to walls and the foundation underneath the shower area. The same is true for a cracked bath or basin or sink. In fact any hard surface where water is often present may be at risk of greater damage than simply the crack or hole – even a small one – in it as water seepage leads to other serious issues.
The shower tray, for example, needs to be looked after and any repairs carried out the moment you realise you are dealing with a potential disaster, because that is exactly what you may have on your hands if you do not act swiftly. Start by cleaning the affected area properly so you can establish what the problem is and allow it enough time to dry out as repairs are not effective when the area is damp or not dried out.
If the crack is not all too serious and will not require a replacement job then you simply make sure you get the necessary materials to fill the crack or holes with, such as a repair kit you buy at the home store. This should include a filler, an epoxy putty, stabilizing foam, that go into the crack or hole; you allow it to set and add whatever brightener or polish is included in the pack. Of course care has to be taken that you follow all the appropriate steps from the manufacturer to ensure you do a proper job, a job that is guaranteed to make the repairs last so that you do not, at a later stage, have to repeat the process.
Prepare the filler as per the instructions and apply immediately to the hole or crack. Once you feel the filler has been applied well you will let the area dry or set overnight. When it has set you will take sandpaper to smooth out the area and to remove any build-up of the filler. Afterwards you will use a polish to make the area shine and look great again then allow the shower to settle by not using it for at least 24 hours.
This is a typical DIY job which, for some, is a challenge they are happy to take on as they actually enjoy such tasks and they may be practical to begin with as they may have been exposed to this kind of repair work in the past. However, this is certainly not meant for everyone.
Firstly, you do not want to take on a job and find you are left with a shoddy result, or a shower tray that will soon leak again. Also, finding the appropriate resins, fillers and tools may not be everyone’s idea of getting ready for a job that may be best left to the professionals.
