Chicherit & Prodrive Partner on Renault Mégane RX Car

Guerlain Chicherit and world leading motorsport and technology business, Prodrive, announce the start of their partnership to develop an all-new rallycross car for the 2018 World Rallycross Championship (World RX).

Frenchman Chicherit, former Free Skiing World Champion, FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup winner, Dakar driver and World Record-breaking stunt driver, has made no secret of his passion for racing in World Rallycross, and whilst entering select races in 2015 and 2016 decided to build his own team, GCK, to enter the 2018 season.

The new Supercar WRX will be based on the Renault Mégane IV and will be designed from the ground up by the British motorsport specialist to the latest World RX regulations. Prodrive will design the entire car at its headquarters in Banbury, UK, including developing a bespoke two-liter turbocharged engine. The new Renault Mégane RX will be unveiled at the 2017 World Rallycross round in Lohéac, France, on 1st September 2017. Chicherit will continue to use the 2017 season to enter select rounds and begin testing of the Mégane RX in autumn 2017, ready for the 2018 season start.

Audi Sport to Enter World RX

Audi AG will be providing factory support to Mattias Ekström’s rallycross project EKS starting in the 2017 season. As a result, Audi Sport, in addition to its commitments in Formula E and the DTM, will be competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship (World RX) in the future as well.

Long-standing Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström had formed EKS at the beginning of 2014, subsequently leading the squad to the top spot in the world rankings with great personal commitment within the space of only 3 years. In the 2016 season, EKS, with the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, won both the drivers’ & the teams’ world championships against strong competition. “We realize that it’s going to be increasingly difficult for EKS to hold its own against the factory teams, so we chose to intensify our World RX commitment,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass.

Mattias Ekström feels that his dedication has proved him right: “We laid a lot of groundwork as a team in the first three years, gathered important experiences and set new standards with EKS. But it was also clear to us that we’d need support for the future in order to be able to continue on this level. That EKS is now receiving factory backing by Audi makes me very happy. I’m convinced that rallycross has a great future, also with respect to potential electrification.”

While EKS already had access to Audi Sport suppliers and partners before, the further technical development of the all-wheel driven Audi S1 EKS RX quattro will now take place with support from the motorsport department of Audi.

Alongside his factory-backed involvement in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Mattias Ekström will be retained by Audi as a DTM driver as well. The Swede has extended his driver agreement, tackling his 17th DTM season in 2017. “I have good prospects in the DTM and would like to become champion for the third time,” says the 2004 and 2007 DTM Champion.

Laia Sanz regresa al Campeonato de RallyCross FIA RX2e en Barcelona este fin de semana

La piloto catalana Laia Sanz tendrá su tercera participación de la temporada en el Campeonato Mundial de RallyCross FIA en la clase RX2e en su casa, en el Circuit de Catalunya en Barcelona. Laia ha notado una clara mejora en su competitividad en esta categoría, lo que también le ha servido un montón en la Extreme E donde ha podido tener más confianza en la lucha auto a auto.

“Ha sido una experiencia muy enriquecedora y divertida correr esta temporada en el Campeonato FIA RX2e de Rallycross. Este campeonato 100% eléctrico ha sido para mí un campo de entrenamiento para la Extreme E en la que participo junto a Carlos Sainz, en el Acciona Sainz XE Team. A lo largo del año en RX2e, he visto una mejora notable. He ganado mucha experiencia en peleas cerradas con otros pilotos, además de mejorar mi manejo al volante de un vehículo de cuatro ruedas” declaró Laia Sanz, que comenzó la transición a los autos en 2021 luego de completar la primera temporada de Extreme E. Participó de su primer Dakar en autos en enero de 2022. “Puedo decir que el RX2e me ha ayudado mucho y también se ha demostrado en las carreras de Extreme E. Ahora me siento mucho más cómoda corriendo con autos cerca del mío. De la misma manera, también he progresado en mis salidas, mi capacidad para reaccionar a las luces y adelantar en los primeros momentos, a menudo cruciales, de la carrera”.

“Cuando tengo carreras y fechas importantes, suelen ser lejos de casa. Tengo muchas ganas de que llegue este fin de semana y correr en casa, en Barcelona, con mi familia y rodeada de mi gente y mi afición” agrega Laia sobre correr en su región este fin de semana, algo que como piloto de Rally Raid es poco frecuente.

“La parrilla de este fin de semana está muy apretada. En el cartel hay grandes nombres con un nivel muy alto y, sumado a que todos los RX2e son iguales, será lo que nos gusta más: carreras trepidantes, mucha acción en pista y la incertidumbre de saber qué pilotos pasarán a la final. Aunque en pista cada piloto va a hacer su trabajo, cuando bajamos del coche hay muy buena relación entre todos en el paddock, lo que hace que las carreras sean mucho más entretenidas” concluye la catalana.

Laia participó del lanzamiento de la fecha del RX2e y el World RX en Barcelona realizada en el Marina Port Vell. En el mismo evento, pudo compartir con Carlos Checa, el campeón de Superbikes de 2011 y ganador en el MotoGP, que también está realizando su transición a los autos y será parte de la carrera del RX2e en el Circuit de Catalunya. 

La pista del Circuit de Catalunya usa varios tramos de la pista que se utiliza en la Fórmula 1, partiendo en la Curva 10 y usa la sección popular de los fanáticos en el “Estadi” y con un importante salto en la chicana RACC. El Mundial de RallyCross FIA World RX y el RX2e serán parte de este fin de semana de acción, el penúltimo del World RX antes de la definición en el Nurburgring de Alemania.

World RX Changes Set to Enhance the Racing in 2022

Rallycross Promoter GmbH has today confirmed the introduction of a number of key regulation changes for the FIA World Rallycross Championship, FIA RX2e Championship and FIA European Rallycross Championships (Euro RX1 and Euro RX3).

In recent months, the Promoter has been engaged in regular and constructive discussions with teams, event organisers, the FIA and the governing body’s Off-Road Commission with the common goal of enhancing the show and attracting new fans – as World RX prepares to embark upon its exciting new electric era in 2022. The format changes agreed have now been ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, & will come into force from next season.

In World RX, each race weekend will begin with a new ‘SuperPole’ shootout immediately after Free Practice, in which all World Championship competitors will complete a single timed lap from a standing start to determine grid positions for Heat One, replacing the traditional grid draw.

Single-header events will comprise three Heats, reduced to two for double-headers. Finishing positions in Heat races will be more important than before, as they will decide the starting positions for the following Heat. The Ranking at the end of the Heats will still be established by total race time.

All drivers will then enter a ‘Progression’ race, in which the highest-ranked driver from the Heats chooses their grid slot first, followed by the second-highest and so forth. The top ten drivers from the ‘Progression’ stage will advance to the Semi-Finals, from where the top five (first and second from each Semi-Final, plus the highest-ranked third-placed driver) proceed to the Final.

All races will feature a maximum of five cars, starting line-abreast and competing over five laps. Championship points will only be awarded at the end of the weekend, according to the following breakdown from first place down to 15th: 20-16-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. The changes will apply to all championships with the exception of ‘SuperPole’, which is for World RX only – the grid draw remains for RX2e, Euro RX1 and Euro RX3.
