Protag-kun Dies in the Prologue, Part 1: The Prompt
I was eventually like "Y'know, the things that are happening in this other character's life are actually way more interesting than Protag-kun; I'ma refocus the story to be about her." One thing led to another, and Protag-kun dies in the prologue now.
--me (going off topic) in another one of these posts.
It all began whatever year World's End Harem came out, as this was all inspired by youtube channel Mother's Basement's description of it (this almost certainly would have been in "Trashiest anime of [season]" or "Best, Worst, and Most Cursed Anime of [year]" as I doubt WEH has enough going for it to warrant a full roast).
Whichever video it was, my immediate thoughts when Jeff Thew started describing the premise of WEH were (1) "I can think of six different ways to nuke this whole conceit from orbit just right off the top of my head" and (2) "Even assuming that the whole question of how a civilization that has allegedly eliminated nearly every disease (implying very robust disease control protocols, since those things are never going to stop appearing) manages to get 100% saturated by a virus is part of the mystery surrounding the Man Killer Virus that apparently lies at the heart of the show (generously, as I don't actually think it's that smart)--if somehow every sperm bank was destroyed during the plague, as well as all human remains so that we couldn't scoop DNA out of old teeth or something, and they lost the ability to produce sperm from stem cells or perform ova fusion, and this setting uses one of the few forms of stasis that DOESN'T imply they have all the technology necessary to be biologically immortal and possibly even conduct some light resurrection...the result of this scenario would not be anything sexy; these men are going to get shunts surgically implanted into their balls in order to collect every drop of the sperm their bodies passively produce 24/7 and never allowed to leave the compound. They could even get put into medical comas to stop them from damaging the merchandise."
And if you've been reading these WIP posts, you probably already know what comes next: So how would I do this better?
My first step was to make it an isekai--an isekai to a world of elves, no less.
I know, I know, but this immediately remedies all seven of the objections I raised above: we don't need cryostasis if protag-kun simply wasn't there when the plague happened, any technology that'd immediately spoil our fun simply hasn't been invented yet, elves being biologically immortal means there isn't the rush that'd force them to resort to factory farming this shit, and elves being naturally immune to normal diseases means that when a disease that does affect them pops up they'll be even more unprepared for it than the Native Americans were, making total saturation at least somewhat plausible, especially if it has a ridiculously long incubation period.
And as for the big problem it creates, namely that this virus is obviously artificial (even moreso now that it's a magical disease) and the people of this world could not possibly have created it...oh, wow, that's a toughie, isn't it? If only it was already an established fact of this setting--one essential to the plot, perhaps--that it's possible for people alien to the elf world to inexplicably find themselves in it, or something.
So yeah, Patient Zero was also isekai'd here. Presumably from a more magitek setting where creating such things is possible (and politically a quite nasty one, since someone greenlighted this shit); alas, he didn't live long enough to explain himself, though he did make quite a stir when he suddenly appeared on the streets of *Paris (yeah, this is another world that's geographically identical to our own).
But there were three other issues I had created. First, I was going to need a magic system. At the time I figured I'd just go with something generic, though honestly wasn't feeling it even then; whatever I did go with, though, had to be able to encompass the other two issues, those being...
Second, I needed to explain the elves. On several levels--from their origin to their biology and ecology to how their biology and ecology effect historical developments in this world. This, as you might imagine, will compose the lion's share of future installments of the series, since the primary setting is their world after all; indeed, the whole reason I've decided to do this series now is that the lilim series has reached the point where I'm gonna have to start discussing what effect the existence of long-lived, conventional-disease-immune, magical people have on such historical events as, say, the colonizing of the Americas, and the changes to history that happen there are almost certainly going to be less extreme versions of changes that happened here.
And third, I needed to explain what the deal with getting isekai'd was.
Protag-kun, as per tradition, was (nearly) hit by a truck before coming here; in early versions there was even going to be a prologue about Truck-kun deliberately hunting down and running over people with The Power in the hopes that one of them will be the one that will take them home, but it clashed tonally with itself, never mind the rest of the story.* Point being, he nearly dies--and Patient Zero very explicitly does die.
So perhaps that's our in: if you find yourself in a situation where You Are Absolutely About To Die and just so happen to have the latent ability to Get The Fuck Out Of There, you instinctively use it. Now, this is starting to sound like a natural ability; furthermore, isekai protagonists also traditionally have some bullshit power or whatever, so that works into what we're trying to do nicely. But if we go that route (and we are going that route) it also raises its own questions, such as: What other abilities come with it? What is it for? Is it genetic--whether or not literal genes are involved--or acquired? In either case, how did it find its way to Protag-kun?
And how many other people like Protag-kun are out there? ____________________ * For instance this prologue, which I must stress does not otherwise take the piss in any way, shape, or form, was titled "The Tragic Tale of Truck-kun." (The character was not actually named Truck-kun.)
