"[𝕬]𝖑𝖑 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖈𝖆𝖓 𝖙𝖗𝖚𝖑𝖞 𝖘𝖆𝖞 𝖔𝖋 𝖆𝖓𝖞 𝖍𝖎𝖘𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖎𝖈𝖆𝖑 𝖊𝖛𝖊𝖓𝖙 [...] 𝖎𝖘 𝖙𝖍𝖆𝖙 '𝖘𝖔𝖒𝖊𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖍𝖆𝖕𝖕𝖊𝖓𝖊𝖉'. - Julian Barnes 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 This vaguely nihilistic impartiality perfectly sums up the narrator and lasting tone of 'The Sense of an Ending' (2011). The novel deals with philosophical questions peripherally, through a secondary character at the centre of attention. I took the advice of the inside sleeve and read the novel in a single sitting. I'm glad that I did. In the interest of keeping this commentary spoiler-free, I'll be vague, but I will say that if I had put it down unfinished before reaching a certain point, I may not have picked it up again. And that would have been a shame. 'The Sense of an Ending' is subtle; it gives glimpses of utter poeticism, but is generally plain and consumable. Our understand of history, and our role within it, are pivotal to the narrative, and I have the sense that ending this novel is just the beginning. Like all good reads (imo), it has planted seeds for future thought. 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 HAPPY 🇬🇧WORLD🇬🇧 BOOK DAY (🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪) @gothicbookworm & I are buddy reading Donna Tartt's 'The Secret History' this month.
