"Diabetes is no longer a death sentence." —Frederick Banting, 1923 Captain Frederick Banting, a Canadian Army orthopaedic surgeon returning from the war, started his medical practise in London. The practise didn't flourish and because of financial crisis, he had to take a part-time teaching position in the department of physiology of the London Medical College of the University of Western Ontario.Banting was an insomniac and on October 30, 1920, at two o’clock in the morning, he read an article on pathology of pancreatic physiology and made a note in his notebook: “Tie off pancreas ducts of dogs.
