November 14 is World Diabetes Day, in honor of Frederick Bantings birthday. He and Charles Best discovered insulin in 1921. They were working under the direction of John Macleod, and James Collip purified insulin to make it safe for human use.
Bantings, Best, and Collip held the patent on insulin. They sold it to the University of Toronto for $1 each, in hopes that it could be mass produced and used to save lives. Type 1 diabetes is 100% fatal without insulin therapy.
Banting is quoted as saying “insulin does not belong to me, it belongs to the world.”
Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) is getting 5x donation matches for the month of November (National Diabetes Awareness Month) if you would like to donate.
