How Promoting Literacy Advances the Rights of Girls

Despite international efforts, 31 million girls do not attend school. For these young women access to even a small library of books is simply out of the question.  

International Day of the Girl is a youth-led movement to combat the unique obstacles girls encounter, particularly in relation to accessing education, receiving adequate health care, and achieving economic security.

Throughout history, literacy has been an important mechanism to advance women’s rights. Today promoting girls literacy is still one of the most powerful tools to help girls achieve equality. We know that when girls read they:

Gain greater self-confidence.

Become more self-reliant.

Achieve greater independence.

Live healthier, happier lives.

Worldreader phone app aims to widen access to books in Africa      

The African division of the Cambridge University Press recently partnered with NGO digital book provider Worldreader to showcase a fresh approach to reducing illiteracy across the African continent.

Technology adoption has made education more accessible in developing countries. The special Worldreader app is doing exactly that. It allows users to access a rich digital library without having to pay extra.

The best feature of this system is its accessibility. People with a simple feature phone equipped with a Java-enabled browser can access it. Moreover, the app will be made available to users via the user-friendly biNu cloud platform – which recently opened its office in Cape Town.
