Distance Learning Techniques for Busy Parents
With the new school year in sight, many parents are feeling anxious. Parents with children that will be distance learning are now grappling with how to work with kids at home while overseeing lesson plans and ensuring kids stay on top of their curriculum. It is not going to be easy.
We’ve talked to our community of experts about best practices for distance learning for elementary school children. Together we’ve built a list of strategies for keeping kids focused while keeping the family unit functional.
Create a Successful Learning Environment
Before the school year begins, get your home ready by creating a successful learning environment. Reorganize your space and gather your tools to get everyone into a learning mindset.
Create a designated workspace for your child. Be sure the space is tidy, functional, and that all needed school supplies are easily accessible.
Create an Achievement Chart. Set clear tasks and goals for your child and reward their accomplishments.
Read to your child for at least 10 minutes a day. Encourage silent reading for older children.
Routines help everyone in the family stay organized, reduce stress, and understand expectations. Routines give your child a sense of stability, predictability, and comfort. Begin each school day with a healthy breakfast and discussion of expectations. One silver lining, without the need to rush out the door, your morning routine might actually be a little easier.
Stick to your morning routine. Get your child dressed, have breakfast, and get ready before school starts.
Post a daily schedule. Review your child’s school schedule each morning and do your best to stick to it.
Review your child’s work regularly. Ask your child to show and explain to you their most recent work in all subjects including math, science, history, and language arts.
Communicate with your teacher regularly. If you think your child is struggling or you are having issues with distance learning, let your teacher know.
The most important thing you can do is to be there for your child. Don’t let the importance of family time fall to the wayside. Remember, your child may be struggling with these new stressors just as much as you are. Be sure that you are taking breaks and creating space for time together.
Talk with your kids about current events at least twice a week.
Take breaks together to give everyone some downtime.
Get outside at least 3 days a week.
Eat dinner together at least 4 days a week.
For most parents and children, homeschooling and distance learning is entirely new. During the first few weeks things will be in flux. Work with your child and your child’s teacher to identify problems and discover solutions.
