Nathan Chen Update: No Quad Axel

Nathan Chen did an interview with the IFS magazine yesterday. Most notably, he mentioned he has not been working on the quad axel. This is very beneficial for Yuzuru Hanyu, who seems focused on being the first to land it. He cited the reason as trying to avoid injury as well as there not being much of a scoring advantage to landing it over other quads or a triple axel. He did say he wanted to see it landed in the near future. It was also implied that the Olympics were the current goal for Nathan, but was not explicitly stated. He mentioned that he watched the Grand Prix series and Japanese nationals, and was impressed with Yuzuru’s and Shoma’s performances. In addition. Nathan is excited for Worlds but is not super optimistic about them happening. If they do go off, he seems ready to go assuming they enforce a bubble policy or similar protective measures. Finally, he will not be adding the quad loop to his programs due to a low success rate in practice, and says his programs are essentially the same as earlier in the season.
