The incredible Malayan trap-door spider (Liphistius malayanus) is among the most astonishing species I’ve seen in my life. With its segmented abdomens, Liphistius are the only living spiders with this characteristic and they reminds how spiders where around 350 millions years ago. I went to Malaysia on 2018 to find it where it’s populations are rapidly declining because of smugglers who go there at night to dig them out and sell them around the world. I’m not against spider keeping, in fact I always kept some myself too, but this particular situation isn’t sustainable and they’re continuously wild caught. At this rate, in a few years the population will eventually drop to zero, cause there will be no more chance for a adult male to find a female to mate with (they don’t tend to go far from their burrows).
