Sensitive Skin and Things
I wanted to take a moment to talk about a few things that have to do with the coming changes to my website and Etsy shop!
Over the next few weeks, you may notice that fewer bookish-themed candles and other themed products will be popping up in the new items. I want to put some people at ease, and say that I will be keeping up the current items for a time, and that I will continue to make themed products. They will simply take up a smaller portion of my overall business. In addition to candles, I will be making themed bath and body as well when the mood strikes me. Lately, I’ve noticed companies and publishers cracking down on the themed candles people are posting (this is the reason I no longer sell my Butterbeer mug candles. I received a message from Etsy notifying me that Warner Brothers had filed a complaint about infringement. I promptly complied, and have no intention to put them back up as items I produce).
This notice from Warner Brothers made me stop and really consider where my shop was going in the long run. As a fan of the series that I make products inspired by, I have no desire to infringe upon any of their content or cause a problem for them in any way. This brings about another change that will be coming to current candles in my themed section: name changes. Not all will be receiving them - and I will make notes in the description as to what they used to be called to avoid any confusion for return customers - but I will be changing the names of certain fragrance blends to avoid using language that could be construed as infringement of intellectual property. It’s a gray area that all fan art creators must deal with, and it is something that I will be addressing promptly in my shop.
Now that I’ve addressed the themed items, I would also like to point out that I will be keeping my specialty cauldron candles as long as I can. Due to the line of one-of-a-kind wax I use to make them being discontinued until they release a reformulated version, they will be on back order and temporarily unavailable until I can test out the new line and ensure that it still creates a quality cauldron. In the meantime, I am planning to launch a line of container candle equivalents that include the same oils and herbs in them as the original cauldrons. They will still correspond to the sabbats/esbats in the same way, and there will be a few new surprise ones as well!
On top of making the above-mentioned switches, I will also be adding more bath and body products to the shop beyond the soaps and bath salts that I already have listed. Changes will be coming there, too, but they aren’t as drastic. I come from a family of people with sensitive skin as well as sensitivities to things such as scents (we get migraines like *that* if the wrong fragrances or materials are used). I passed these lovely traits on to my daughter, and immediately noticed that there were very few products that she could use without reacting to them. The ones that she could use, well, they were overly expensive and didn’t seem to avoid the ingredients I needed them to. I turned to handcrafted markets, finding somewhat closer to what I needed, but nothing that was just right.
That’s when it dawned on me: this is the exact same position I was in almost two years ago when I made my first soy candles.
The whole reason I began making my own soy candles, particularly bookish-themed ones, was that I couldn’t find candles that were fun or inspired by the things that I love that didn’t make me ill or knock me on my butt for three days with a migraine. I started out making them for myself, then saw a need expressed by others for the same thing. Next thing I knew, I was opening up a little shop on Etsy and already seeing orders! People were contacting me and getting excited that I offered themed candles they couldn’t find anywhere else (my Kim Harrison themed set was the one I received the most comments about, thanking me not only for making them for that book series, but for making them in a way that didn’t bother people’s allergies)! Thus, From A Fable began to take over my mind and life. Growing each month into the business it has become today.
So, when I noticed a similar problem with finding bath and body products for myself and my family a few months ago, figuring that my second daughter (currently due in two months) would most likely share these traits...I started contemplating the idea of branching out into bath and body. Just like I did with candles, I researched the best ingredients and bought some to start playing with. No intention of selling anything (yet), I made some test products for my family. The results were wonderful! I had complete control over what was in them, and could decide what to put into each product to cater them to my individual needs. This spurred me to look into what was on the market (handmade and otherwise) that fit with what I was making. While there are quite a few handmade bath and body products that are organic, all-natural, or otherwise that sound absolutely wonderful, I still am noticing a lack of products for those with super sensitive skin!
This amazes me, as I know so many people with very specific needs when it comes to allergies and sensitivities.
Fast forward a few batches of body butters, face scrubs, lotions, and soaps, and here I sit to announce the new direction that From A Fable will be focusing on: gentle products that cater to those with sensitivities that aren’t being addressed!
I know I won’t be able to encompass every possible need out there, but I thought sharing the products that have helped myself and my daughter the most would be a good place to start. This idea is what will be bringing about the coming changes in my business. I wanted to let those that are already wonderful customers of mine know that the same level of quality, if not an even higher one, will be still be expected in my products, and let those that are new to From A Fable know exactly what I am all about. The whole reason I created a small business making soy candles was to create the things I needed/wanted but couldn’t seem to find anywhere else. This same reason is the one creating the changes I am implementing now.
I hope to see everyone enjoying the products and seeing their benefits in the weeks to come, and - most importantly - I hope to see people *enjoying* them!! Those of us with sensitivities like to have fun, creative products that work for us, too!
WORN LEATHER
Worn leather furniture, usually in tan colors, add a touch of warmth in these mostly monochrome interiors. All these interiors have a minimal, Scandinavian vibe going on, which I love. Quirky art and tastefully arranged bookcases add a personal touch. Materials used are mostly wood, steel, glass and worn leather.

Totally awesome rock music with popular song flourishes from New Haven, Connecticut. If Worn Leather were from Auckland or Melbourne they’d have been on the Jimmy Kimmel show already. Is that still on?
