Who knew a date could go SO bad…?
Let me start this by saying, I'm pretty much over dating at the moment. I am 22, and I am over it. Back story: I am new to town and I've been looking for friends. My coworker asked her boyfriend if he had any available friends for a "double date" and he had a great one in mind or so he thought. Yada, Yada, numbers are exchanged, photos, Instagrams, mindless texts are sent back in forth (you know the whole preface to the actual date itself). Well, the date night rolls around and the HORROR begins.
The night began by me having to go pick my date up, which isn't a big deal. I prefer traditional guy picks up girl dates, but whatever "Don't be picky Cherrelle". So if you know anything about Houston, it is BIG as hell. So I have to drive from the SW side of which I reside to the NE side where my date is. I shoot him a text letting him know I'm on my way because I'm rarely late, and the initial plan was to be to the Movie Tavern by 7:10pm. So I get my date, after circling trying to find exactly where he was. He gets in the car is absolutely silent. Dead ass, his voice was no higher than a whisper and I constantly had to encourage him to speak. Background on me, I am not shy when put in awkward situations (usually) I man up and try to make it a comfortable situation. Back to the story: He got in the car smelling like really intense weed. Of course, I say something like "What the hell bro?" (Not those words exactly but pretty much) he returns with saying, "Well, I got high before you came because I thought you were going to stand me up" So, I playfully clown him, and leave it alone. (I don't mind weed, but I really would prefer if the first smell I smelled on you was effort or cologne works equally as good.) So, the night goes on plans change due to tardiness.
We end up at Joe's Crab Shack. As we sit down, I instantly signal to my coworker that this is not going good before the guys got to the table. We all sit and proceed to order drinks. We all get alcohol he gets a Dr. Pepper (Coo), we order an appetizer of Spinach/Artichoke and Lobster dips; he doesn't try the spinach dip because of the "green stuff" in it (The spinach). We are all talking about what we are going to order, he complains about how everything on the menu looks weird, and how he would never try it. (Mind you we are at a Seafood Restaurant). We place our order. I believe he just ordered Fish/Shrimp and chips. The whole time we are waiting to for the food I'm either jumping into my coworker/boyfriend's conversation or attempting to make sense of the nonsense my date was saying. For example; in the car we were deciding on where to eat, he makes no suggestion we get to Joe's he seeing a Long Horn across the street and just keeps gazing at it. Or, the fact that he kept asking me to look up the score of the Seahawks vs. Panthers game. Note: his phone works he was just screening some girls call so he kept turning it off. (Of course, I brought attention to it every chance I got). Like, "Don't get in trouble with your girlfriend" or "Who's call you screening?" His response simply some girl. Also, this man didn't have my phone number saved into his phone. Boy Bye! But kept saying Love At First Sight to me the whole night. *Gags*. The food comes out, and it just gets quiet and awkward at the table, he eats his food extremely fast and once finished he complained about how this has nothing on a *insert authentic sea food place*. The Bills come around, and he doesn't reach or comment on it at all. So in my mind, I'm like what the hell? So I ask finally, are we going halfs or you got this? He says "I got it, maybe?" Maybe?? So he put the exact amount on the table, when I asked about a tip he said "F her" and proceeds to leave. So I give her a tip (she was an awful waitress, but still it's work).
Lastly, we head to the movies. We go to see Taken 3. I ask him just out of courtesy because Stevie Wonder could see I wasn't interested in this cat; I asked him if he had it. He said, no and asked if I could I cover it. Long story short; I paid for our movies. Again, I'm not like that, if you communicate to me you don't have it and since we are just "friends" getting to know one another, cool. But, for me to have to continuously have to ask if you have money. No way jose! I was completely over the night if I could've went home then I would've but I had drove. We get into the movie theater and sit down. He tries to put his arm around me, and I inform him "No, I'm uncomfortable!" So I move completely to the other side of my chair to make it obvious DO NOT TOUCH ME SIR! I fall asleep in hopes to rush the night. Finally, the movie is finished and I'm taking everyone to their cars and home. I'm dropping my date off and he asks for a hug. I step out to hug him, and this boy was expecting something more. I shot him a look like get the hell out of here, said goodbye as I got back in my car and pulled off.
1) MEN: If you don't have money, don't agree to go out or don't make a point to take someone out. Having to decide who is paying for things is dated, and an unspoken agreement (usually) - He asks you out, he intends to pay.
2) Don't blatantly tell your date you are screening some chick's call. Even though, I saw it and him look repeatedly at his phone. If thats where you want to be, why are you here?
3) Be open to trying new things. NO grown woman is going to want to have to egg you on to try something- even something as simple as Spinach/Artichoke dip. So unattractive. Also, to say you don't like something you have never tried.. What are you 4? Cut it out.
4) When on dates, even if you wouldn't regularly, ALWAYS tip your waitress. First, it tells us that you are considerate of other people. Second, it shows that you are aware that it is something you should do without question. Lastly, it shows you aren't a cheap asshole. There is nothing more unattractive then having to ask a man, are you going to leave a tip. Rule of thumb: this person is at work, if they did their job leave a tip if nothing but $3-4 dollars, you spend more on a trip to the gas station. Its just polite. (former waitress rant).
5) Make it a point to make conversation with your date. This might seem obvious but after this experience WHO KNOWS?
6) Don't force physical contact on them. If we are just meeting, you should wait for me to signal that I want you to touch me. Don't just assume and grab my hand. No!!
7) Speak up. Nothing is more irritating then not being able to hear the person you are talking to or having to try to read their minds.
8) Your date should be your focus: Again, this may seem obvious. You should be asking questions, making conversation, getting to know the person. Not questioning the score every time you speak.
9) Make it a point to be a gentleman. Open doors, offer to pay, let the lady sit down first, the basics.
10) Never assume your role in your dates life. You are not her man, you are the date for the night. So be on your P's and Q's. In this case, a friend for this night only.
I literally could go on and on. BUT, to summarize my point; This was literally the worst date ever, I will not be speaking/going on another date with this character. If you think you are not ready to date, chances are you are right. Study up people! Lord, where are finishing schools when you need them.
