September 25 we drive to Herculaneum. The road is lined with a type of very tall umbrella pine, planted at regular intervals, which makes the drive very pleasant. The Herculaneum site is located on the outskirts of Naples in a village called Ercolano in what looks like a dodgy neighbourhood. We leave the car with some Napolitano toughs for 10 Euro who will take care of the vehicle. Once inside, the site it is very peaceful.

The Power of the Penny. Last weekend, I took a tour of the Antietam Battlefield National Historic Site near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Not as well-traveled as Gettysburg, there is distinct power in visiting the site of the most American casualties of any single day in history. I also visited the cemetery there. Guarded by the Private Soldier monument, nearly 5,000 Union soldiers found their final resting place here. During my visit, I noted the presence of pennies placed along the tops of all of the gravestones I found. I do not know who placed them there. Faced towards the heavens, Lincoln held a vigil of his own, almost as if he was also honoring those Union dead who halted Lee's first invasion of the North. It was a poignant moment. Any study of Civil War history reveals the significance of Antietam, as it gave Lincoln the "victory" he needed to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended any chance the Confederacy had for support from European powers and opened the path for the eventual passage of the 14th Amendment. It seemed fitting his place there - Lincoln - with those men, in that place, and in that fashion. #worththevisit #civilwar #antietambattlefield #Lincoln
