For @ctl-yuejie 💕 (since I saw you posted about them)
here's some old thoughts on the flat challenges. i thought cereal would be a good time to post them :)
they each need the challenges as a coping mechanism. They need guaranteed relationships in a time when that does not feel very guaranteed and a method of controlling those relationships. They see each other as deeply unpredictable, and to control the time they spend with each other is to control that unpredictability to an extent. It’s also a tool for boundary-setting. It was pointed out in this post that the flat challenges provided a way for Peter and Balth to hang out in a positive way without there being emotional strings attached. It’s important for them to be able to spend time together without that being in some way indicative to each other or their flatmates that there’s any deeper meaning behind it, which is important, given that the last time they tried was in VACUUMING and we all know how that ended.
It provides this no strings attached kind of interaction for the other relationships in the flat as well. Ben and Freddie already hang out independently but this is a way for Ben to do it in the way that makes him feel most comfortable (with the camera on) and for Freddie to dial up the competitive nature of that relationship without it being personal (“no feelings involved!”). It allows Peter to spend time with Ben similarly in a way that doesn’t evoke any of the negative feelings he may get from independently seeking him out, while allowing him to play into his leadership and team-oriented strengths without having to acknowledge that because he’s not emotionally ready. Balthazar gets to hang out with his flatmates with the boundary of knowing that it will only be for the extent of the game and he can retreat back into his room straight after while still being able to genuinely bond with them.
In this sense, it also allows the flatmates to let other people into the flat with specific boundaries and purpose. With flat bonding in the Rules, they have a reason to invite people over that isn’t sex or emotionally fraught song writing and with the curfew, they have a method of getting their space back to themselves when they need it as well.
My sister just introduced me to this cool goth band that I've never heard of (mostly because their Mexican and music taste dosent really venture far out of us/other English speaking countries) and I'm having quite a good time
