The last rounds!
So the WPC ended with 2 team rounds. The first one (Round 22) was 7 scratch puzzles. If we scratch one wrong square, we got 0. We managed to do 3 of them correctly, in part due to luck whereas we made a mistake on the 4th one we tried.
Round 23 was based on a massive word list of every competitor’s name spread out in 20 word puzzles. Part of the puzzle was figuring out which names went into which puzzle. I ended up solving the largest point puzzle which was a crossword where only the spots of consecutive letters were given. There were initially 25 names that could fit into the 20 spots but after it was pared down to 22 possibilities, I tried a break in and didn’t stumble on names like Jaan and Jaanus.
So the day started out fine, got worse and then ended on high notes. I’m hoping to get top 50 in the official rankings and I’ll find out after our banquet dinner tonight. I fly out from India tomorrow night!
Round 21
This was the final individual round and the shortest one of all. It was 15 minutes to assemble a broken pieces puzzles into 6 sets of 3 to form triplets. It took me some time to get going but after getting some sets together, I realized I wasn’t going to have a unique solution... so I revisited my first set and saw that it enabled me to get more sets if I switched out one of the pieces and then that led to a unique solution. I finished with just over 4 minutes left. It was nice to end the tournament on a high note!
Round 20
After lunch, we had a small round of 8 puzzles in 30 minutes. I focused on the easier puzzles and solved 4 of them for 135 out of 350 points.
Round 19
This was a logidoku round making puzzles in the form of sudokus. I would have thought that being good at sudoku would be useful in this round but boy was I wrong. I ended up breaking half of my attempts and the puzzle logic was much more prevalent than any sudoku logic. I believe I only got 2 of them despite the time for the round which would give me 70 out of 500 points.
Round 18
This was another long round. It was puzzles based on user submitted ideas. I think I did fine in it despite having to reread the instructions for some before solving. If my solving was clean I should get 340 out of 1000 points.
Round 17
It’s the final day of competition for puzzles. I started the day in 43rd (officially) and this round was a lot of tricky puzzles. I think I’m expecting 296 out of 600, with the potential to have 85 more and also the potential to have a lot less because of penalties for incorrect answers (which increases as you get more incorrect).
Rounds 15 and 16
The team rounds tonight were interesting. They involved an instructionless round where we started at our own corners with a specific rule and solved up to 4 puzzles before merging with our teammates to solve another 2 much larger puzzles with all 4 of the rules combined. In this round, I may have gotten the most points in the individual portion as I solved 3, while we got nothing on the team part.
Round 16 involved the opposite. We started out with 4 puzzles and from our solutions, we would figure out which station had which set of 4 puzzles we could then solve individually. I ended up breaking the hardest of the team puzzles before solving one that one of my teammates gave up on. I ended up moving on to the hardest station and solved 2 of the 4 puzzles. After the round, we found out that the German team got the wrong set of puzzles at one of the stations and as a result, the round will not count for anyone.
And that’s the end of Day 2 of the WPC and Day 5 overall.
