Rounds 13 and 14

These were the team rounds to end Day 2. I struggled with the puzzle I got but managed to complete it. We didn’t finish everything but we did relatively well.

The last round were a planet theme and they were circular puzzles that rotated (it would be the same as a 9x9 grid with one side being a toroidal). I did 2 of them for about a quarter of the points and then we guessed at the final puzzle which is derived from the solutions of the rest of the puzzles. We didn’t finish everything, but hopefully did enough to get some partial points.

The results from Day 2 have been posted and I got 320 and 330 on the last 2 rounds of the day and that put me at 82nd unofficially and 55th officially.

There will be 4 rounds tomorrow to end the championship.

Rounds 6 and 7

These were the team rounds for Day 1. We had a first timer on our team this year (and a full team to boot). There isn’t much to say about Round 6 because there was an incorrect clue which made the puzzle unsolvable and likely cancels the round. Round 7 were connected loop puzzles with different rules and we didn’t complete any of the parts.

I got what I was expecting from Rounds 2 and 3 and now I’m 53rd overall officially and 81st unofficially. My teammate is just inside the top 10 (about 1200 pts ahead of me) and I’m 2nd out of the Canadians 320 ahead of the next highest.

The last rounds!

So the WPC ended with 2 team rounds. The first one (Round 22) was 7 scratch puzzles. If we scratch one wrong square, we got 0. We managed to do 3 of them correctly, in part due to luck whereas we made a mistake on the 4th one we tried.

Round 23 was based on a massive word list of every competitor’s name spread out in 20 word puzzles. Part of the puzzle was figuring out which names went into which puzzle. I ended up solving the largest point puzzle which was a crossword where only the spots of consecutive letters were given. There were initially 25 names that could fit into the 20 spots but after it was pared down to 22 possibilities, I tried a break in and didn’t stumble on names like Jaan and Jaanus.

So the day started out fine, got worse and then ended on high notes. I’m hoping to get top 50 in the official rankings and I’ll find out after our banquet dinner tonight. I fly out from India tomorrow night!

Rounds 8 and 9 were completed

The 2 team rounds for the day were at the very end before supper. My team this year, consisted of 2 Americans and an Austrian solver. Round 8 consisted of 9 different sudokus that had transference of one of the digits from 1-9 in some order. Our team managed to solve 4 of them with a slim possibility that we got a 5th one right at the end. Probable points 800 out of 1800. Round 9 consisted of 5 jigsaw sudokus which had pieces which needed to be applied in a specific order to get a unique solution. We had 20 minutes to do it and I attempted the killer jigsaw sudoku, which by itself was worth more points than the rest of the sudokus combined. It was fairly difficult just to get the pieces in the right spot. I settled on a spot with 5 minutes left and managed to solve it with about a minute left... or so I thought. I checked over what I did with about 15 seconds left and noticed 2 1s in the same row! After erasing a moving a few numbers around, I think I got it correct with about 2 seconds left... but I may have broken the killer constraint in the process of my last second fix. My teammates managed to solve the other 4 sudokus, which will hopefully give us a perfect round.

Arizona Cup

Hey y'all, just giving an update. On Friday for the qualification rounds I shot a 610 which landed me in 4th place internationally and 3rd in the US! Thats a great start for the outdoor season! Saturday was the team rounds, Anna, Karissa and I all shot as a team, and we had so much fun! We ended up placing Second!! :) After the team rounds was the start of the eliminations. 1/32 1/16 1/8 I had a bye the first round, and won both my matches. Now I have the Quarter Finals to shoot!
