FAMILIES CELEBRATE THE TRUE SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY AT OUR BRING THE COOL FESTIVAL
Cool Culture was delighted to welcome over 600 Cool Culture adults and children and Cool Culture alumni families to our Bring the Cool family festival at the Brooklyn Museum on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The festival, created in collaboration with the Brooklyn Museum, was centered on the theme Express Yourself, and served as the culminating event of Cool Culture’s pilot We Are All Curators initiative.
Families explored art-making techniques such as weaving, collage-making, and watercolor resist painting, enjoyed a family dance workshop led by Camille A. Brown & Dancers, and ended the day with a soulful musical performance by Shine and the Moonbeams. Fun fact- we learned that Moonbeam band member Lavondo Thomas is a former Cool Culture parent!
We Are All Curators themes were integrated throughout the event, with festival activities such as a Community Quilt and a For Freedoms photo booth station where families offered stories celebrating their communities and their visions for creativity and freedom. The event served as a kick-off of Cool Culture’s exciting partnership with For Freedoms, a nationwide arts and civic engagement initiative conceived by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman. The festival was funded in part by the Onassis Cultural Center of New York.
At Cool Culture, we believe that access to the arts is a human right, regardless of income. These first touches at museums are crucial to ensuring all families, regardless of income, have access to arts that can be used as a tool for bonding, self expression, and learning.
