A lovely (FREEZING!!) day at Pentridge Children's Garden - wrapping the Fig (Ficus carica) tree and surrounding the base with leaves raked from the garden; tasting the incredibly sweet Coral Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) cane as we chop it down; and sending the kids home with Philadephia Dutch Butter Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) that is still going strong under low tunnels. A note on Sorghum cane - this African crop is as sweet or sweeter than sugar cane. This was my first time chewing the cane, which was frosty cold and mind-blowingly (a word?) sweet (though the kids didn't like it). Apparently it is full of vitamins and anti-oxidants! I saw an amazing diy Sorghum press at @namu_farm one time and would love to make one or borrow one next year!! #sorghumcane #sorghumbicolor #coralsorghum #philadelphiadutchbutter #ficuscarica #wrappingthefigtree #pentridgechildrensgarden 📸 by @fluffmcduff (at Pentridge Children's Garden)
