Starry lettuce flowers. The aster (Latin for "star") family includes sunflowers, dahlias, echinacea, calendula, zinnias, artichokes, chicory, chrysanthemum, daisies, fleabane, dandelions, and on and on. A lovely (FREEZING!!) day at Pentridge Children's Garden - wrapping the Fig (Ficus carica) tree and surrounding the base with leaves raked from the garden; tasting the incredibly sweet Coral Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) cane as we chop it down; and sending the kids home with Philadephia Dutch Butter Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) that is still going strong under low tunnels. A note on Sorghum cane - this African crop is as sweet or sweeter than sugar cane. This was my first time chewing the cane, which was frosty cold and mind-blowingly (a word?) sweet (though the kids didn't like it). Apparently it is full of vitamins and anti-oxidants! Carefully re-cleaning some Philadelphia Dutch Butter Lettuce seeds in hopes of higher germination rates. This machine runs on suction from a shop vac, allowing the heaviest seeds to drop into the bucket below, and sucking the lighter seeds and chaff into the chamber on the right. This is the fourth pass through the machine on higher and higher settings. We'd rather have 2 or 3 ounces of mature seed than 6 ounces of seed with low germ rates.
