I just cranked out four 500-word articles in two hours. Kinda proud of that. Sometimes I amaze myself on what I can do on deadline.

Who'da Thunk? I'm the King of New York!

For being a cast of mainly boys, let's talk about the feminism in Disney's Newsies. 

But then here comes Medda Larken, who isn't on Vaudeville--she's actually in the theatre district. She's got a show where she headlines; and she's a woman (really, race doesn't matter. She's the star of the show in 1899. Of course, people were huge racists in the 1900s too, but we don't need to talk about that, lest I fume). She sings a song about how well she's doing in life, when wealth and wisdom weren't two things assigned to women in those days.

And can we talk about Katherine Plumber, based off of actual bamf Nellie Bly? She's somewhere between sixteen and eighteen years old, and she's already making her own way. She could simply write for her father, but no. She goes out and she takes what she can because she wants to change things for the better.

You know something cool about both of these women?

Neither of them need a man. This is something that is uncommon in fiction, and in a lot of musicals. Think about all of the women in modern day media who need men: notably, the main characters of the recently canceled television hit, SMASH. Karen was the worst offender. Then, we have the Twilight series, we have Fifty Shades..., we have Cinderella (though it is indeed my favorite musical), we have Phantom of the Opera, Glee, and Wicked (though it appears to be a feminist show), et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum. And while all of these are amazing stories (maybe not the second two), none of them give women a really strong idea of what things will be like when they're older.

Newsies? I'd recommend it to any girl who wants to make something of herself. I'd recommend it to any boy who wants ro make something of himself. Realistically, it is one of the most inspirational shows I've seen, or listened to and loved from afar. And friends, the feminist leanings of this show is mainly why.

Welp, guys, it's here.  The Refuge fic.  Have fun!

Title: No Refuge in Hell Fandom: Newsies (Musical) Genre: Angst Summary: The first few days Jack Kelly spends in Snyder's Refuge. Warnings: Violence against a minor. Notes: I'm sorry it's so short.  I may (may!!!) write a longer version when I'm in a better headspace for it, but right now, this is what I'm capable of.

He's only fourteen when they catch him.  He's only fourteen, and they don't care.

He goes to the Refuge.

Maybe he shouldn't have punched that cop, he realizes, when the man called Snyder hauls him up by his collar, only barely through the door of the place (it looks like a prison, or an asylum, and nowhere good), and mutters, "I can tell already you'll be trouble."

Jack Kelly is reborn in the fires of the Refuge.

But to be reborn, you have to die.

It begins when he spits in Snyder's weaselly little face, and Snyder slaps him -- hard -- and throws him aside.

But Snyder neither forgives nor forgets, and neither does Jack Kelly.

He manages the first few days all right; there are a lot of boys and a couple of girls here in the Refuge, and not many of them are subservient enough to avoid Snyder's wrath.

Jack, though, Jack isn't capable of staying out of sight, out of mind.

And Snyder hates him for it.

"You are a child," the man snarls at him when he refuses to obey some order or another.  "You will listen."

"Maybe when I'm dead," Jack spits back.

That's when the beatings start.

Jack has never been beaten like this, never been handcuffed to a cot and kicked until his back and his belly are two big bruised masses of flesh, never been left there in agony and unable to breath without pain.

It's never Snyder himself, but the spectre of the man hangs over everything.

Jack is beaten.  Jack mouthes off, pretends there's nothing wrong.

But Jack is breaking.  Snyder is winning.  

And that, that more than anything else, is the most painful part of all of it.
