Some common pitfalls of new writers!
What is the state of astronomical knowledge and science in general in this world?
In one ask you mentioned "a black hole", I'm nerd 🤓 and I immediately thought about *those* black holes
F said: "Finally drug yourself out of your room? I was starting to think you got swallowed by a black hole." Did people know about such objects in space? 👀🕳
HAHAH damn that was a slip of the tongue pen
I'll have to find a minute to go change that wording to "abyss" because they definitely don't know about black holes in this world. sorry about that 😅
See it's difficult sometimes because I get so focused on trying to put myself in that character's shoes/thoughts/feelings that I forget to consider certain elements of the game world.
The knowledge of science and astronomy is similar to the Ancient Greeks and Romans. There may be some exceptions but I haven't determined them all yet. Although, in line with this world's myths and religion, people view the stars as secrets gathered from Eurybia watching humans. So, there's some difference in belief/understanding compared to our world.
I watched Jungle Cruise last night and I just have to say....it sucked. I was really looking forward to it and they just made every basic mistake you can make.
I already have so much on my plate, but I will be making a post about where they went wrong and how the writers are a bunch of basic cowards.
(Not the cast though, they all did and amazing job despite what they were given)
PSA: You don’t have to tell us your character is thinking things
I think this might happen because people are afraid of having their opinions conflated with a character’s, or because they’re used to movies where everything is external, but in a story you don’t actually have to use words like “she thought” in order to show us that a character is thinking something.
Consider:
The bar was smoky and over-crowded. Mary didn’t like it. She thought the only people who would willingly choose a place like this to meet up were idiots at best and most likely degenerates. Ugh, she thought. I need to get out of here.
Vs
Mary pushed her way through the crowded, smoky bar. It was packed full of the usual idiots, desperate degenerates grinding against each other like some frenzied mating ritual. She didn’t want to waste another second of her time being jostled by these pigs.
In the second example, we know what Mary’s thinking because we’re deep in her POV. It has less narrative distance (ie, the difference between the narrator and the character) and, because of it, a stronger voice. It’s also got stronger verbs doing more of the heavy lifting instead of more passive sentence constructions.
“Characters sitting around thinking about stuff” is something a lot of folks often talk about making for boring reading, and that’s definitely true when the thoughts are handled like that first example. But there are authors whose books are predominately made up of characters thinking about things -- we just don’t notice because those opinionated characters make up the whole of the narrative voice. Chuck Palahniuk, Brett Easton Ellis and Kurt Vonnegut come quickly to mind. Study how they handle POV and character opinions, and see what lessons you can apply to strengthen your own writing.
A Couple Writing Memes
Because you guys know how much I’ve been getting into meme-making lately xD here’s a couple about some annoying things people do in writing and ways to fix it :p
So @iguanastevens just pointed out that I used ‘aphrodisiac’ instead of ‘anaesthetic’ in the last chapter of my fic. (Chapter 20 spoilers incoming)
Meaning that when I meant to say that this mysterious flower’s pollen had induced a coma, what actually happened was that I created sex pollen.
AND NOBODY ELSE HAD CALLED ME OUT ON IT EITHER
Were the rest of you just like, oh yeah, guess Otabek’s boner knocked him out for four days or like???
I’m sorry I’m just... I laughed so hard I CRIED. AND NOW MY ABS ACHE.
This is the best and most stupid mistake I’ve ever made
