ㅤI originally made this to be a resource for myself whenever I felt out of practice writing smut, but I thought it might be helpful for other writers who may be new to writing smut/feeling uninspired/translating from another language.

ㅤSometimes I've felt awkward or have cringed about writing smut (especially when I was new to it) but then I realized that sex is art; in all its nasty, sexy, heavenly, gross, glory — sex is art and a beautiful part of life. So after that I just let myself write freely without feeling ashamed.

ㅤWith that out of the way, I present to you my fundamental list of smut writing essentials. Hope it helps you even if it's just to find a word you're looking for.

Combat, Catastrophes, and Potential Ramifications - Part 2

Season 1, Episode 2: The Child

Canyon Attack: Bladed weapon - hits to helmet, pauldron, and vambrace. Blade slices through bicep on left arm.

By Lamplight: Tending to the sliced arm, Din uses what looks like a cauterizer. (Never does seem to get it to an acceptable state.) Infection? He tries to fix his chest plate, indicating he was also hit in the chest.

Clinging to the side of the Jawa crawler: Narrowly escapes being crushed between the crawler and a rock face. Jawas drop parts on him as he scales, hitting his helmet, his arms, and one bounces off his lower back. His fingers are slammed by a metal flap swinging closed. He hangs from a single hand (all that weight held by one shoulder would be a LOT). Electro-prodded. Finally, electrocuted.

Electricity is conducted through his armor electronics. Rendered unconscious. Falls from the height of the crawler and lands flat on his back. (Pausing. Because this alone should have killed him. You can break your neck falling off the roof of a single story home. The crawler is easily four time that height or MORE. Being electrocuted could have also killed him. The cardio ramifications are crazy. Spinal damage, broken bones, concussion, trauma to internal organs. You name it. It could happen here.)

Walking back to Kuiil's: Vambrace still conducting/sparking electricity.

Traveling in the cockpit of the Jawa crawler: Bangs helmet on the overhead as they hit a bump.

Mudhorn fight: Din is rammed, thrown up into the air, and comes down hard on his back, not once but THREE times. (Sequence: Connection, lift, throw, fall, slams into ground.) Full body ramifications possible here. Back, spine, muscle, bone, shoulders, hips, head. The mudhorn hits him hard enough to WARP his chest plate.

While Din is down, the mudhorn pins him with his horn along the length of his body and presses down (on the side NOT covered by the warped chest plate). Also slams the helmet with the tip of the horn. Crush possibilities here. Bruises, cracked, broken ribs. Sternum compression. Organ trauma. The mudhorn's legs are dangerous close to Din's. Damage to his feet or ankles possible here.

Din hooks the mudhorn with a line and is dragged. Possible damage to feet, ankles, legs, arms, wrists, elbows. Twisting and dragging. The initial yank alone could have damaged or dislocated his shoulder. Line snaps and he lands hard on his shoulder and rolls.

The third and final time he's rammed, thrown, and lands on his back, he stays down. His vision blurs and it seems like he might pass out. (Really, he should already be dead several times over at this point.) The circuity sparks on his chest plate base and he seems to stabilize. Really, anything goes here. Again, full body potential ramifications.

Journey back to Kuiil's: Limp is very pronounced.

Reconstructing the Razor Crest: Din and Kuiil seem to jump right into the project and work all the way through the night and into the next day(s). Um, exhaustion. Time to at least nap, Din.

Great whump episode.

Adding comments in by @autumnwoodsdreamer after the fact because they really fit well: #also interesting to note in the art book by the concept art shown in the credits of this ep (the one where din’s limping back to the crawler#with the egg) they mentioned that they specifically drew him lopsided and wonky and one leg dragging because the fight messed up something#in his back and hip. I like to believe it never came fully right

Fantasy Guide to the Season

The Season is the period within the year where the social elite, the wealthy and the noblity usually return to the the city for a long string of events, balls and dinners. It was a time for luxury, for pleasure and most importantly to socially socially by networking.

A Change in Locale

The Season drew all the nobles and wealthy back from their country estates and abroad back to the capital. At the height of the Season in the years preceding WWI, most of the elite held homes within the City where they would move into while the Season was on. There would have been a mad rush to return to the capital in order to be at the very centre of things. Since the English Season always coincides with sittings of Parliament, all members of both Houses take part in the Season.

Social Events of the Year

The Season was a string of events of mixed variety ranging from the arts to sports to royal rituals between April and August. In the UK some the most recognizable events of the year belong to the Season such as the Grand National and Wimbledon. The Season was also the time for debutants to make their social debut and when royal orders such as the Order of the Garter would be bestowed. Between all the official events, most of the nobility and elite would throw dinner parties, tea afternoons, salons and balls.

To give you an idea of the range of events we will use the English Season as an example of all the events that run in this time: Glyndebourne Opera, The Proms, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, West End theatre Horticulture, Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot, Cheltenham Gold Cup, Badminton Horse Trials, Grand National, Royal Windsor Horse Show, Epsom Derby, Glorious Goodwood, Cartier Queen's Cup, Trooping the Colour, Garter Service of the Order of the Garter, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Boat Race, Henley Royal Regatta, Guards Polo Club, The Championships, Wimbledon, Cowes Week, Lord's Test cricket match. Since the Season also coincided with the marriage market, there would be a lot of engagements announced and weddings held.

At the end of the Season, usually around the 12th of August the elite would leave the city and return to the country for the hunting and shooting season.

What to Wear to the Season

Like most tradition heavy events, the Season was all about dressing appropriately. Wear the wrong thing and everyone you want to impress will see it. At polo matches, the gentlemen wear a blazers and strictly white trousers. Ladies are encouraged to wear flat shoes at these events. At the Royal Regatta, gentlemen wear lounge jackets and ties, and are permitted to wear their club colours as a show of support. It is usually traditional to wear boater hats. The ladies must wear dresses or skirts, with the hem below the knee. Women do not need to wear hats to these events. At events as such as Royal Ascot, everyone wears hats. The men wear either morning dress with waistcoat and a top hat, usually in grey or black. The only time a man removes his top hat is when he's dining, sitting in a box, on the balcony or within the Royal Enclosure. Ladies also must wear hats and are absolutely not permitted to show off shoulders. At the Presentation of the debutants, the traditional choice for the debutantes is a white court dress (though soft pinks and shades of white are permitted). The dress was short sleeved and had to have a train. The debutante wore long white gloves, a veil in her hair with three white ostrich feathers and jewels. Before the debutant has been introduced, she would hold her train over her arm and then let it fall when she has been presented.

How to Have a Successful Season

The Season was essentially there to keep all the nobles and elite entertained while they fulfilled political duties. Against the backdrop of fun and politics, there was a competition going on. Different hostesses would battle to throw the best parties, the most exclusive balls, the most interesting dinner parties. Families would spend lavish amounts of money fighting to impress and remain relevant. If one wants a successful social Season, one has to obtain as many invites as possible and establish one's self at the centre of the elite social sets. To be seen at all the top events was a sign of success and in this success, you can begin to advance socially by making contacts with influential peers or to advance through the marriage market. As a host, the most important guests such as Dukes, Marquesses and any royal family member marks you as one of the top tier hosts.

Hey, it's the person from the new writer post. Answer when you are more human haha How do you come up with a story line and conflicts, without constantly almost copying other stories? In my story, I have a setting, some characters, and the general idea that I want their to be conflict (some bigger conflict, and some to do with disgust in 'mixing of races') - I just don't really know what the main conflict will be. I have a world in mind, but don't know how to build the actual story. Help?

Hey there! :) Sorry it’s taken me a couple days to get back to you. Life has just gotten in the way, unfortunately.

So, first of all, I want to (re)assure you that even if details of your story are similar to another, by the fact that you are writing it, it will be different. You’re going to bring not only your unique author’s voice to the tale, but also your experiences and creativity. So never be afraid to draw inspiration from other stories!

Now, as far as conflict goes, there are two broad types. Internal and External.

Internal Conflict - a personal struggle of a character. Examples include: fear of intimacy but also abandonment; desire to act ethically in face of a required and unethical action (*cough*Hamlet*cough*); guilt over a past action; desire to care for someone who may harm them (not just due to being abusive, could also be due to a worsening medical condition); or some disconnect between what a character thinks and what they feel

External Conflict - a problem outside of a character that requires them to act. Most movies and TV shows use external conflicts as their main driving points, so I’m sure you’re familiar with many examples.

The real fun in storytelling is mixing both types of conflicts. For example, you could have a character with a combined fear of intimacy and abandonment confronted with an external problem that requires them to get close to someone to overcome, with the consequences of not being that they’ll be left alone/abandoned for an extended period of time.

And that’s a very basic example.

You have multiple characters, and each can have an internal conflict (though not all of those conflicts need to be spelled out on the page), and when characters have opposing internal conflicts, you’ve got a recipe for added tension and drama. Will Character A’s issues around acting ethically in midst of a war be helped or hindered by Character B’s belief in the sanctity of (some) life?

Let the characters internal conflicts (if you choose to use them) act as foils to each other.

And when you then pit those internal and interpersonal struggles against an overarching conflict such as a war? Well, there’s lots of fun ways for all those tension points to interact. Like baking soda and vinegar.

Now, a good way to figure out what the main conflict will be is to focus on your main character(s). What do they want? It can be as simple as a glass of water, or as complex as restoring the lost honour of their family name. But whatever obstacles are in the way of that need...that’s your main conflict. All other conflicts in the story need to link to and/or interact with the main conflict.

Okay, let’s say your character wants a glass of water. What’s standing in their way? Maybe it’s an alien world where the natural liquids are too acidic to drink. Most people get their hydration through gel-like substances. Actual water is reserved for the elite of the elite. Okay, so we’ve got the goal and the obstacles. If you don’t already have a “why,” now would be a good time to come up with it. (An injury requiring clean water to treat? An elite character who lost their status struggling to regain it? A scientist wanting to prove that they can replicate genuine water - if they had a sample of it?)

With the broad strokes of the want, the why, and the obstacles outlined, you’ve got a great start on your main conflict. Everything else should be obstacles/challenges toward resolving the main conflict. And it doesn’t all have to be wrenches thrown at your protagonist. Maybe some action has resulted in even the elite losing access to water. Well now you’ve got some fun potential for pointing fingers, working with the enemy, new obstacles to overcome, or even just a moment of re-evaluation (e.g., is this conflict worth the price?)

Does this all make sense?

As far as what you mentioned about the conflicts you want to include, I would say the racism makes for a good internal conflict, especially if you can pair it with reasons for such beliefs to be confronted and potentially changed. (Not saying they must be - some people are just too stuck in their ways, after all - but that opportunity showing why those beliefs are unfounded or however you frame it is what keeps the racism belonging to the characters and not the story itself*)
