writers-cube replied to your post:"Sons and Daughters" reminds you of Mordred?
Ahhh omg that is so adorably heartbreaking!! (Also I just listened to “Sons and Daughters” for the first time and now I am drowning in an ocean of Orkney bros feels…)
I have to admit, I don't know much about these The Decemberists folk, but it's a really good song and I'm so glad to forever douse it in Orkney feels for so many lovely people. \o/
Also just. If you ever feel like sobbing into the chasm of feeling things about Lot and his gaggle of boys, please always come to my inbox.
writers-cube replied to your post “According to this article, Charlie Hunnam is a likely choice to play...”
I just checked imdb and it has Charlie Hunnam as Arthur too, so I think it might be true! Woohoo!! (Idris Elba and Elizabeth Olsen are listed too, but as 'rumored.' I'm hoping for Bedivere and Guinevere...)
I'm hoping so, so much for that! Idris Elba would be so good as Bedivere, they can't mess up this opportunity.
I've only ever seen Charlie Hunnam in PacRim, but he seems like a good actor and I could totally see him in the role of Arthur. I'm not really familiar with Elizabeth Olsen at all, but if she plays in this King Arthur film after Age of Ultron then she'll have pretty much secured herself a strong fandom following XD
writers-cube replied to your post: very drafty: from Book 2, a new knight and a new squire
Ooh this is going to be good!! Can't wait to see how Galahad and Mordred get along!
Thank you!! My plan right now is for them to be added as additional POVs in Book 3 (Book 1 is just Arthur; Book 2 is Arthur and Morgan; Book 3 would be A/M/G/M), so that will definitely be explored. :D
((the only problem I have with that plan right now is that Galahad does die well before Camlann so then you're left with the three...))
novangla said: It’s okay, I also didn’t get nearly as much done as I expected. Life happens, writer’s block happens, that’s okay. The important thing is to keep it in your life and remember the things you really love (why are you telling it, the characters, etc)
writers-cube said: Looks like we all ended up in the same boat this time… Hope you’re feeling better, and maybe you’ll be back for Camp NaNo Round #2 in July! :)
wearethestories said: Oh no. I know @novangla has been having a rough time writing, too. Try to brush it off and keep writing - whatever it is (novel, journal, letters). You can do it!
Thank you all for the encouraging words! I'm trying really hard to just write anything for now and ease my way back into it. I've been congratulating myself a lot on just getting any little drabble written, haha. I think it's helping, though; it's becoming a little easier to face blank pages.
I was tagged by writers-cube and badlybehavedbookworm back to back so. I will do 22 questions. Then I will tag tamikaflynned, mizumuzi, notthatjaded, visardist, reclaimingpassion, palletgreen and darkersolstice if they want to, but I know most of y'all aren't super into this sort of thing. So. o/
Rule1: Always post the rules.
Rule 2: Answer the questions the person who tagged you asked and write 11 new ones.
Rule 3: Tag 11 people and link them to the post.
Rule 4: Actually tell them you tagged them
1. We all have more than one, but what would you call you primary fandom?
...uh. In the online world, probably NBC Hannibal or Chronicles of Narnia. In the real world, I'm probably most likely to attack you with analogies to Arthuriana or the X-men. So that's my four primary fandoms I'm sorry I'm indecisive on a question meant specifically to be decisive.
2. If you had to choose one book, and it was the only one you could ever read again, what would it be?
The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. It's a book I've read a few times and that ages really well, plus is much happier than most of the books I tend to read on a loop.
3. Is it spring where you are yet? Because it isn’t here.
Pretty decidedly. It's just I spend a lot of time up in the mountains so I forget. Then I come back to the valley and pack dumbly for going to the mountains because the valley is lovely and the vicious cycle continues.
4. While we’re at it, what is your favorite season?
Winter. Hands down. In every country I've ever lived or visited.
5. Favorite musical?
The snobby answer is Last Five Years, because it's a musical with deep personal meaning from my freshman year of being an SM. The 'what my iTunes clearly states' answer is Cannibal! The Musical which makes all my fellow former Theatre majors roll their eyes emphatically (but oddly makes all my fellow former Government majors really happy).
6. Favorite musical genre?
I love rock and roll. I really do. I love classic rock very, very much, and everything that's ever evolved out of it.
7. Favorite guilty pleasure food?
甩并 which I've been told translates funny so don't Google-Trans it because you should just know it's RIDICULOUSLY GOOD DEEPFRIED DOUGH WITH BANANAS IN IT aaa so good so delicious. /o/
8. That children’s film that you still watch when you’re feeling down.
The Pebble and the Penguin or any Bluth I can get my hands on really. :|a
9. What TV show are you currently working your way through?
I'm keeping current with Hannibal and have various things on my Netflix list I keep postponing because I hate watching sad/rough things while I'm here but I love them as a general rule.
10. Pimp your favorite TV series of all time.
You know what's literally the best show that's ever happened ever is Star Trek and what's great is that TOS and TNG are both perfect in every way and that some people really like DS9 or Voyager or whatever power to them but StAR TREK. WATCH IT. WATCH TOS ESPECIALLY AND THINK BACK TO THE SOCIOPOLITICAL CLIMATE IT WAS MADE IN AND BOGGLE.
11. Lots of cool movies/series being made, and books coming out, this year. What are you most excited for?
...eheh. I have no idea what's being made outside of China these days. Like things pop up on my Dash and I go 'ooOOoo' then realize it was made in 2012 or whatever so. :>
---
1. Last book you finished?
Sun Tzu's Art of War. I told all the teachers I'm mentoring to read it, then realized I had to re-read it if I wanted to chat with them about it. There were more cannons than I remembered.
2. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Probably my old hometown of Boston, MA in the US. Like, I love all the places I've visited/lived, and I want to visit/live in a whole lot more, but... as a place to be situated and really live my life? Boston. I miss it.
3. If you could live during any time period, when would you live?
If I'm being romantic about shit, the Renaissance because mm~aah~CULTURE. But. In all honesty, this one, because this is the one that's so far had the easiest international travel. Not being able to get between the US and Europe/Asia would seriously restrict the things I've been happiest about in my life.
4. One tv show everyone should watch?
I already said Star Trek but STAR TREK. Do it. Seriously. What's wrong with you stop reading this and go watch it.
5. Last song you listened to?
According to Grooveshark, 我从草原来 by Phoenix Legend. Sounds about right.
6. Last movie you saw in the theater?
I... believe American Hustle last time I was in the States? I'm not 100% on that, though.
7. Next book you plan on reading?
Diplomacy by Henry Kissinger. I may give up and read World War Z by Max Brooks instead, but I'm overdue to read Kissinger. It's just reeeeeally dense. Painfully so. I'm the worst, I know.
8. Most interesting place you’ve ever been?
Either the random caves we went spelunking in in Abruzzo (because we almost died like ten times), or Shangri-La (because we went there in the middle of winter and it was crazy). Yes.
9. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation for entirely practical reasons. (And because going *BAMF* *BAMF* everywhere, which is almost as cool as going *snickt* at things.) The runner up is always telepathy/telekinesis.
10. Dream job?
Joining the diplomatic corps for the US.
11. If you could live in a fictional world, which one would it be?
...does old romanticized Isles work? No? Then probably the Wizarding World from the Harry Potter series. Seems like not a lot of baggage once that one guy is defeated.
Aaaand questions for whoever wants!
1. Song you listen to on crappy days to cheer up.
2. Instrument you've always wanted to play but never tried.
3. Guilty pleasure TV show.
4. Best book to read on a plane.
5. Favourite memory from school (any level of school).
6. Weirdest dream you can remember having.
7. Favourite Knight of the Round Table (DO YOUR RESEARCH FOR OUR FRIENDSHIP Monty Python also accepted).
8. Aspiration for the next five years.
9. Favourite fairy tale/myth/legendary legend.
10. Best way to pick yourself up from the dumps.
11. Thing you're most likely to quote at someone else when you're in a pretentious mood.
okay, here we go, more of my thoughts on the historical inaccuracy of my novel, which I've been thinking about a lot, especially with all the great replies I've gotten about it.
The thing is, I'm happy with including anachronisms for the sake of the story, I just don't want to include them through laziness or accidentally through historical accuracy mistakes. I want to know what I'm changing and make sure there's a purpose to the decisions. If that makes sense.
I know it's pretty much impossible to go for full historical accuracy (even if I wanted to, which I don't), since no one even knows that much about 6th century britain anyway, but I want it to be recognizably set in that era. And if I'm having knights and tourneys and ladies-in-waiting then it totally won't be. But I just...don't even know what the social structure then was actually like or what anyone in any position would have been called??
The other main issue is making sure that my current novel and my stories about Arthur/Mordred/the rest of the 'main cast' are recognizably happening in the same time and place. Right now this story is taking on way more high medieval elements, whereas Arthur's story is much more down-to-earth and celtic/roman inspired, a fact that probably has to do with the different sources I'm looking at mainly for Tristan and Isolt compared to the rise and fall of camelot.
I think I am just going to say 'fuck it' and make it my own world and do whatever I want to, because otherwise this whole historical accuracy thing is going to drive me insane. Still, I do want to try and get a better grasp on what actually is historically accurate and what isn't.
I also feel as if I can't get away with as much because it's not high fantasy? Like, I'm concerned that people will expect it to be realistic and then find that it's not. I hope the dragon in the first section will clear that up, ahahh.
novangla, I envy you so much right with your post-apocalyptic world where you get to make all of these decisions free from historical constraints XD
(tagging everyone who replied to my original post since this is sort of an answer to all of those comments?)
Thank you!! I've opted out of my current cabin and requested all of you. Next sort is in 14 hours, so if we can all request each other by then maybe we'll be in luck.
For your main characters: What do they perceive as their biggest flaw/what do others think it is?
ohhh goodness, this is such a great question!
Palamedes For what he perceives: he’s generally overly self critical in many areas and is disappointed in himself whenever he can’t reach the impossibly high standards he sets for himself. What others think it is: that he’s too much a stickler about things being just so, too uptight and takes things too seriously.
Brangwin What she thinks: not being strong/capable enough to accomplish everything she wants to, and that she can sometimes be a little bit too controlling (but really it’s mostly just being helpful, because sometimes other people could use a little push in the right direction when they’re clearly doing things wrong, right?? :P). What others think: that she tries to take all the responsibilities of the world onto her own shoulders, and that she can be kinda pushy and judgmental with people about things that are none of her business.
Iseult What she thinks: that she’s not very competent, that she’s only good at superficial things (ahhh no Iseult don’t think that, you’re a totally competent badass!). What others think: that she’s very stubborn and can be extremely cutting/mean with her words.
Tristan What he thinks: that he’s a useless person who only ever disappoints the people he cares about and drags them down (this is really opening a can of worms though because Tristan has so many serious insecurities). What others think: that he’s vain and doesn’t take responsibility seriously.
This was such a fun and interesting question to answer! There’s so much discrepancy between what they think their flaws are, what other people think their flaws are, and what their flaws actually are.
