1 & 8
1. The opening sentence of your favorite project.
I….a favorite project??? Uh. Well, while I have an abiding love for Aaron-The-Psychic’s story, I’ll have to go with the project I’d been querying, because I just love those characters in a different way…and have a lot more plans for them.
That opening sentence is, “Pink highlighter was not good choice for graffiti.”
Or at least it is right now.
8. Favorite [character I’ve written].
Uh…Rekeir, maybe. It’s harder for me to pick a favorite (partially because I hated Evari so much), but I like the higher-energy thoroughly obnoxious characters of mine.
Characters: Harry Potter, Maxon, Katniss, Peeta, Armin, Castiel
hahaha too bad imma publish this anyway bc i figured it out!!!
Push off a cliff- Cas. he can fly! yay wings!
Frick frack- Maxon
Marry- Peeta
Set on fire- Katniss. she IS the girl on fire;)) plus shes been on fire before and shes still going strong
Wrap a blanket around- Armin. poor baby needs it the most.
Be roommates with- Harry Potter!
yay! i figured it out and it works nicely.
caiprince13 replied to your post:okay so, brainstorming for story purposes but ...
That is such a cool idea. Are you using it in a story/what is the premise of the story you are using it in? (Sorry, I get really excited about cool worldbuilding stuff.)
Thank you!!! No apologies. I'm writing a post-apocalyptic genderbent retelling of Arthurian legend (blog for it at songsofarthur) -- and while the people of Arthur's country are pretty much... idk, post-gender? There are some gendered terms but I think of it mostly that as the story being "translated" into 2014 English instead of 3500 or whatever. In effect, people are referred to as men and women but there are no real social ramifications.
The fay people, however, do have a strong sense of gender, though they're fay so there's no reason it should be ours. The story isn't set there primarily, so I've kind of touched on them here and there, but Corbenic/the Waste Land is going to be much more heavily influenced by the fay so I need to figure it out. So I know they have a Queen (the Lady of the Lake) and two Kings (the Oak King and the Lord of the Hunt), and I decided at some point that faeries get really upset at being misgendered. But they're fay! They don't necessarily need it to be a binary (though I only wrote Corbenic with two, based around a land/sea dichotomy). And since there are three major fay rulers, it would make sense to do a system of three...
Plus I was thinking of what actual alternatives to masculine-feminine would be (other than like, a spectrum or opting out) and thought of this or a two-factor system that would make m and f two of four (sort of like how left and right can be looked at as two options with authoritarian and libertarian as two others). Anyway, them's my thoughts.
Fanfic Meme: 5, 7, 17, 19, 33, 41
Favorite fic author: Ooooh that's a tough one. I have a few favorites in the fandom, but I'll just say that there are four authors who have multiple works in my bookmarks list (for the Tolkien fandom, at least), and those are determanfidd, lapin, bodysnatch3r, and sam_ptarmigan. ALSO special shout-out goes to bofursboffing/agggron, who only has one Hobbit fic on AO3 but was also one of my all-time faves in the Spartacus: Blood and Sand fandom.
One shots or long fic: I like long oneshots the best, I think. 5k-11k fics are my favorite, and what I tend to write the most unless it's for a domesticity thing. Long fics are great, too, although I'm wary of authors who stretch things out too far; three of my repeat-favorite authors are on there specifically because they manage to write multichapter stuff that doesn't lag.
Any characters you can't stand to see in pain: Nope! I'm horribly cruel and will see all of my babies in pain--although the type of pain is something I'm more particular about.
Do you read porn or does it make you uncomfortable: I read porn... but I also read it through feminist, queer, just-because-it's-a-kink-doesn't-mean-it's-free-from-criticism eyes. Which means I will "nope" my way out of a fic if it is too dubconny or offensive.
Least favorite AU tropes: modern/our world AU omophobia as written by someone who has never experienced it themselves frustrates me sometimes. There are two main versions of homophobia that straight people are aware of and those are the two that crop up in fics--also lots of people don't fully comprehend the way that homophobia and the concept of homosexuality itself vary in time and place. Homophobia in Ancient Greece, 1960s New York, and 2012 West Hollywood do not look the same, at all, but I've seen them treated the exact same way in fic. Tbf, this is as much a "life" and "fiction in general" problem as it is a fandom problem, though.
and 41 was just answered :)
okay, here we go, more of my thoughts on the historical inaccuracy of my novel, which I've been thinking about a lot, especially with all the great replies I've gotten about it.
The thing is, I'm happy with including anachronisms for the sake of the story, I just don't want to include them through laziness or accidentally through historical accuracy mistakes. I want to know what I'm changing and make sure there's a purpose to the decisions. If that makes sense.
I know it's pretty much impossible to go for full historical accuracy (even if I wanted to, which I don't), since no one even knows that much about 6th century britain anyway, but I want it to be recognizably set in that era. And if I'm having knights and tourneys and ladies-in-waiting then it totally won't be. But I just...don't even know what the social structure then was actually like or what anyone in any position would have been called??
The other main issue is making sure that my current novel and my stories about Arthur/Mordred/the rest of the 'main cast' are recognizably happening in the same time and place. Right now this story is taking on way more high medieval elements, whereas Arthur's story is much more down-to-earth and celtic/roman inspired, a fact that probably has to do with the different sources I'm looking at mainly for Tristan and Isolt compared to the rise and fall of camelot.
I think I am just going to say 'fuck it' and make it my own world and do whatever I want to, because otherwise this whole historical accuracy thing is going to drive me insane. Still, I do want to try and get a better grasp on what actually is historically accurate and what isn't.
I also feel as if I can't get away with as much because it's not high fantasy? Like, I'm concerned that people will expect it to be realistic and then find that it's not. I hope the dragon in the first section will clear that up, ahahh.
novangla, I envy you so much right with your post-apocalyptic world where you get to make all of these decisions free from historical constraints XD
(tagging everyone who replied to my original post since this is sort of an answer to all of those comments?)
Writers Asks: 3, 11, and 12!
3. Have you ever written a chapter/scene that made you cry? Which one(s)? A few times, yup; but then, I can make myself cry just by thinking about character deaths, so that’s not really saying much, hahah. Once was writing Mordred and Arthur’s deaths, another time was Lancelot finding Elaine’s body drifting down the river in her boat.
11. Have you ever created alternate versions of your own stories? Are there any you are tempted to write? Way too often! The most notable is my futuristic sci-fi genderbent arthuriana with mechas. I actually really want to write it but I also want to focus on finishing my medieval arthurian novels first, hahah. But yeah, in general I come up with AUs and ‘what if’ scenarios all the time. Most of them are excuses to think about ships that I’ll never make canon, woops
12. Do you sneak personal references into any of your stories? Would you care to share some examples? Naw, I don’t think I ever have, actually.

1. What’s your biggest pet peeve?
My biggest one has to be singing. When people sing for no reason. I don't know why I don't like it. People sing because it brings them joy and am glad that they are happy but it just bothers me for some reason. But I'm glad that it is not bothering me as much as it use too. I really hate this pet peeve, it makes me seem like I am rude.
2. If you could change anything about yourself, what would you change?
We all have our flaws that we hate, but I wouldn't change anything. I am proud to be who I am.
3. What’s your favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving is fun because you get a lot of yummy food, Christmas is great, but I think my favorite is Halloween. I like candy, scaring little kids, dressing up, and all the Halloween movies.
4. If you had to spend the rest of your life on an island, who would be the one person with you? (friend, family, fictional character, anyone :D )
Wow that's a hard one....ummmmmm probably toothless. Just so we could fly around and stuff, I think it would be great.
5. Who’s your favorite artist/band?
Again a hard one. John Powell maybe or Murray Gold or Hans Zimmer.
6. When is your birthday?
February 3
7. What do people do to annoy you the most?
Whispering/being all sneaking in front of me.
My Questions
