I Once Had The Last Laugh
I moved out and trod a new path,
Confident I could live by my musical craft,
Everybody around me took me for a fool,
As I gave my soul to the crowd with my guitar for a tool
Each day I would sing and I’d play on the street,
I would hope to make just enough money to eat,
So day in and day out I’d play hundreds of songs,
All the while being told that I’m living life wrong.
Busking for money, oh as great as it is,
Meant scraping by on a tiny ration just to live
I could do better perhaps by a new change of scene,
And from there I’d continue to live out my dream.
I’d say just over a week playing in my new spot,
Could afford 3 out of 5 of my meals to be hot,
Yet despite my progression, my family still say
That they still look upon me with anger and shame.
So as they turned their backs, my fate seemed to be sealed,
To live out my days busking to eat meals,
If like me you believe destiny to be real,
Then to you the next part of my tale will appeal.
One day I was playing a song of my own,
When a man in a flat cap and beard came along,
He asked where he could purchase the song I’d just sung,
I said “I couldn’t afford to record even one”.
Taken aback the man quietly smiled,
He asked if I’d like to make money from music full time?
I didn’t know what to say, could this actually be real?
As he gave me a pen, to sign my first record deal.
“Get a proper Job” my Father would scream,
But I proved that with love you can fulfil a dream,
And what a dream it has been, nobody can say,
That I did anything other, than by my own way.
From busking out on the streets,
I’m now top of the charts,
I knew that by chasing my dream,
I’d have the last laugh.
