hi! for the ask game - 2, 19, and 31 <3
aaaahh!! hey there! <3 :)
2. Which of your fics is your pride and joy? and 31. What fic meant the most to you to write? Answering these kind of hand-in-hand :)
Gosh this is harder than I thought! I love each one I've written for different reasons. Obviously I write what I like to read lol, but a few stand out:
I'd Wait Forever is something I'm really proud of for how it covers grief. My dad died very suddenly when I was 16 so it's something that hits pretty close to home, and I really hope I did the grieving process justice. The setting in this one is also something I just adore. Fixer-upper farm? Check. Middle of the woods? Check. Snow? Check. CHRISTMAS? Check. The perfect recipe to get me feeling cozy despite the angst 😊
Down to the River started as just an idea that I wanted to get down in a spur-of-the-moment rush of inspiration, but then actually became a portrayal of the kind of everyday peace and joy and community I crave and hope to have one day. It's also just so fluffy and I love Rex so much 🥹
Slippery When Wet made me really proud because a) it was the first request I ever fulfilled, and b) it took a couple months to write, and I had so much fun writing the storm and fall section. This was also my first real go at something somewhat whumpy (and I love whump tbh). Honestly pregnancy fics are kind of a guilty pleasure of mine 😅
Identity is my newest installment, so I might be biased here lol. This one took the longest out of all of them for many reasons, mainly being that it covers pretty dark topics (kidnapping, torture, etc.), and included a bit of combat. I've never really written combat before and that's what I really struggled with, so I definitely learned a lot writing this one. But I love whump and rescue, as cliché as that may be, and that made this so much fun to write.
As for the one that meant the most to me? Probably I'd Wait Forever or Down to the River. I put more of my heart into those two than I think I realized while I was writing them :) <3
19. How do you get over writer's block?
Good freaking question, because I really don't know 😂 I don't have a set method to getting out of a funk, but I've found a few things that really help me.
Listening to music, specifically instrumentals or soundtracks. I make playlists that embody the mood I'm trying to write or inspire me the most per-fic. This has helped me finish pretty much every fic I've ever written. You should see how many playlists I have on Spotify, I have a whole folder dedicated to writing. It's chock full of moodboard-playlists and fic-soundtracks.
Reading others' fics. I don't know how to describe it, but reading fanfiction sometimes cures my block on writing it. It's like I get reinvigorated about getting involved with the community. I get so jazzed that we can all write about the characters we love and share it with each other, and somehow that gets the creative juices flowing again.
Taking a break. Sometimes this lasts a few hours, other times it lasts over a week. My typical break is maybe 3-4 days. I spend that time looking at fanart or making those soundtrack playlists, but usually it's spent truly taking a breath away from fandom stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love the fandom stuff. But my brain tends to get burnt out on it if I've been looking at it too many consecutive days. I'm not sure how to describe it, but stepping away for a few days really rejuvenates my creativity. When I step away, I'm usually watching other shows, movies, and crocheting while I listen to them in the background.
Thank you for the ask!! I hope these answers were ok and not too long-winded 😂❤️
