My Ode to Writers

My school is hosting a Writers’ Week and I had the pleasure to listen to Curtis Sittenfeld speak today.  She said a lot of poignant things, but one thing really stuck out that made me dig in my teacher bag and pull out my handy-dandy notebook and write it down.

She said that when writing, to writers, it seems like the great amount of time that one spends creating the magical world can seem disproportionate to the amount of time it takes for readers to digest through it.  It might seem like your labor of love is unappreciated and skimmed over when in fact, your heart and soul was put into it. I want you to know that if you write and share, I read it, digest it, take it in, think about it, ponder it, chew on it, will myself to DREAM about it, and then wake up and do it all over again.   If you have a multi-chapter work, you can bet that I am counting down the minutes it will be until I have enough peace and quiet and TIME to read more of what you have created.  I yearn to be able to run off of little to no sleep because my will and want to read what you wrote is so much bigger than my need for sleep.

Unfortunately, I need sleep.  And I need to parent.  And I need to work.  But don’t think that I have forgotten your pieces.  Don’t think that they are under-appreciated even though I am literally the worst fan girl and NEVER TRULY leave reviews.  I’m so sorry for that.  I tell my students about what I read.  I call you my friends to my other real-life in-person friends and I brag about your talents.  I can’t write much in fiction so I don’t know if I can pay you in MY stories, but I can do a decent narrative.  And I can analyze the hell out of anything that you write.  (I’m an English teacher.  It’s what I do naturally)

Yet another version of Jay Gilligans previous lectures on juggling (TEDx and GCHS Writers Week). Go see them if you haven’t before.

A lecture about his work in juggling (past and present) to give us a glimpse into the future. This version has better lighting, better filming, better articulated, better juggling, better sound, better music, better staging and better costume. It all makes the message more clear. Hearing Jay talk about juggling helps me finding my own language about juggling.

Here's five reasons why I find Jays talks interesting:

Jay... has worked with most juggling styles and technics. thinks a lot about performing juggling. has English as a first language. works extremely hard to keep up with other art forms. has been in the game for a very long time, actively.

The most important part for me is at 14:48, where Jay starts to talk about colors. His example of a painter using one color makes me realize how ridiculous our object manufacturing is. We've come a long way, but there's an even longer way of what we can do with juggling. This realization makes me excited and motivated to push juggling forward to give future generations of jugglers more possibilities to express themselves.

Hey guys! So my school has this really cool thing called Writers Week where professional and student writers go up and present to an auditorium full of kids. This year I decided to take a leap of faith and present a piece that I wrote about —shocker— Taylor Swift. I wrote it about how she helped me get through some of the darkest years of my life and the role she’s played in how I view myself. Most of all it’s a dedication to everyone out there who has been made to feel stupid for loving something infinitely.

I’d love if you guys would watch this and reblog it so maybe Taylor could see? If not, I hope you enjoy what came from me deciding to speak now (wink).

P.S. I got into my dream school using this as a college essay.
