It bothers me how people perceive my art sometimes. Like I get it. When you see a messy thing you think it’s unintentionally messy. And you want to see that intention so that you can know it’s “good”, so that you can know that when you show it to your friends it’s “good”. It’s a test you want an artist to pass to earn your trust, because you are investing yourself into the work so you need to trust the artist.
But like, that’s so boring.
There’s so much more expressiveness and complexity to any 5 year old’s drawings than to most professional artists’ work, all because the artists need to pass this test. And to pass it you have to eliminate a lot of the conflicting, confusing, but ultimately enriching information in your art. You have to sanitize your identity. And generally, make worse art.
So just to be clear, I’m intentionally not passing this test.
