my dialogue may be cheesy and this chapter may be taking a while but at least im not taking 10 years to write dialogue of Inquisition scout Harding criticizing a literal religious figurehead, prophet, herald, and defacto leader of the largest religion organization in Thedas, for... not interacting with "the little people" when you spend half the fucking game do random side quests that the leader of the largest religion in the world should not be doing.

at least my characters arent suggesting turning a former refuge for people escaping enslavement into a capitalistic hellscape wedding venue or joking abt an enslaved man who is a victim of manipulation "DoInG iT" with his abuser, the woman who enslaved him, and then manipulated him for centuries upon centuries.

maybe a plot point didnt get properly hinted at ahead of time (or as much as idve liked it to be), but at least i didnt spend 15 years building up a marginalized population using the real world suffering of Indigenous communities and peoples that i have no right to, only to then immediately betray the memories of every person i cannibalized for success by making them Unapologetically And Totally Definitely Actually Evil AND Responsible For All Evil Ever In The World Actually.

i may not be a perfect writer. but at least im not fucking Trick Weekes saying "yah we didnt spend any time on "uwu slavery bad" bc we didnt think we needed to. btw heres my entire essay on Actually why we shouldnt abolish chattel slavery in this specific fantasy country."

in december, I dictated some writing into an audio recorder, and until i saw the transcripts just now, I forgot I also did some affirmations for myself.

You can write this. You can write it tonight. You can write one scene. You can set the scene. No one has to read it unless you like it. But no one can ever read it unless you write it. You can't read it unless you write it. And you can't write it unless you try. Start somewhere. Start at the beginning. Start at the end. Start somewhere. And go for 20 minutes. See what happens. You can do this. You can write this. You have the ability. It will be good for you. You will enjoy it. You will have a sense of accomplishment. You can treat it like a casual ask with a time limit. And then you'll have something to work with. It's not going to be perfect, but it will be good because you wrote it. And it won't be good on the first try, but it will be good because you started it tonight.

Best advice I know about writing fanfics about comic characters?

“The real writers have done weirder.”

Comics today are making whole new grungy universes that change almost everything about a character, crossovers of literal Looney Toonsian degrees, and making the most diabolical writing decisions I’ve ever seen be put to paper.

The difference between the parent company of those comics and fan-works doing the same sorts of stuff? One’s done primarily for the intent to make money, the other as a labor of love/creativity.

You cannot do worse than the “real creators” when you are doing all of this out of a genuine love for the story, make it as insane as you want and cherish the fact you are doing this out of love.

I’m taking this fic thing too seriously. If Rachel Reid can write about the NHL like that I can invent degree programs. No one is going to enter my bedroom at 2 AM and kill me for not representing a Canadian college I have never attended in a biblically accurate way.
