Query for all followers, but I think @romancingthebookworm especially might have good insight?

Romance is not my forte, but I want the romantic subplot to be, you know, compelling.  So:

In my story, Arthur and Gwen meet once anonymously and they have a cute interaction but it’s brief.  Neither really knows who the other is.  That’s fine.

In the first draft, their next interaction has Arthur semi-disguised. Gwen falls for Arthur here, but thinks she’s a knight, not, you know, Arthur.  I liked that this let her interest seem more genuine, but it also means their entire courtship other than that first meeting is in Act III. Very smooshed given that they get married at the end of the book.

In the revision, I have added Arthur going to Gwen for permission to build at Caerleon, and we start to see them as a couple there. But that does mean that (a) Gwen already knows Arthur is Arthur and (b) when Arthur shows back up, Gwen will still know it’s the Pendragon and not some kind random knight.  So it’d give us a longer build but I worry it may make Gwen’s interest look more self-serving and ambitious.

Does the benefit (pacing) outweigh the loss (sincerity)? Any clever ideas for how to fix the loss or make it its own benefit? There’s time in future books for Arthur to question Gwen’s sincerity but not much in book one.
